>She doesn't really care if I go to bed early or not
Are parents seriously like this nowadays? My parents would make me go to bed at certain times when I was in grade school. I loved the suspense and intensity I felt when sneaking out of bed to grab a snack in the dead of night, hoping I'd never get caught. The slightest sound, whether it came from me or not, would always put me on high alert. There was a sort of thrill and excitement to it. It felt like playing a stealth game.

This is actually the best handheld ever, though I will say the advanced was more comfortable to hold, a regular advanced with a backlight probably would have been the best option.

I didn't get a smartphone until like 2011 because I was not ready to leave physical buttons and clamshell designs behind. It didn't feel like that big of a leap to me, DKC for GB doesn't look that much worse than the Donkey Kong Land games for GBC. Pokemon red and gold weren't that far apart either. idk. the leap to GBA felt insane though, it was like having a snes (A REAL CONSOLE!!!) in the palm of your hands. totally blew me away. My biggest wow moment growing up though was seeing Sonic Adventure 1 on display at walmart for the dreamcast. i couldn't believe how incredible the water looked and how round sonic was in 3d. it just completely blew my socks off.

Modern designers literally cannot FATHOM this process. If you ask them about it, or explain it to them their eyes will glaze over and their business school training will completely tune it out and they will start telling you about how if you remove the speakers from the GBC you could reduce the price by 20 cents and charge 5 dollars for a proprietary speaker add on.

Most modern parents will teach their kids how to swim or ride a bike and then neglect them for the rest of their lives because now the kids aren't cute anymore. That's why there's so many 20+ year olds that can't drive, clean, cook, do laundry, do taxes, know how to handle money or how to have normal social interactions. Then schools get blamed for it.

In hindsight I would've gotten a lot more sleep and done better in school if my parents were wiser about this sorta thing.

But actually, I don't even play Pokemon anymore and the general pop cultural knowledge that playing Red/Yellow/Gold/Ruby gave me is still more relevant than any of the algebra/calculus/etc. that I learned, so I guess it worked out. Not like they taught me something useful like how to file my taxes anyway.

The music in this commercial occasionally lives rent free in my head. I bought Spider-Man because of this commercial, seeing a Game Boy do pseudo-3D shit like this blew kid me's mind. I also had Star Wars Episode II. Absolute piece of shit shovelware. Spider-Man was bretty gud though.
