Loser here who's a "legacy player" that has been with XIV since 2010 when it really sucked, and can confirm it's just WoW themepark with either heavy references or straight up rips models and characters from other games ala XII or Disddida NT and lately FFXI. We've had crossover events with XIII, XV, as well as XVI and two previous XI events and loads of stuff that are retellings of things like FFIV in a set of story patches or even nods to The After Years and Mystic Quest SNES.

I stay subbed since it's like $7-$10 a month for me with my lifetime discount, but it'll run most people $12-$15. If you end up on Primal > Excalibur somehow as a free trial or paid player, let me know and I'll set you up for life as a mentor of sorts and possibly a guild / Free Company invite if you'd be interested.

If you love final fantasy, its at least worth playing through for the story and basically just treating it like a single player game that happens to be in an online game/world.
Free trial goes up fairly far in the story through multiple expansions and you could probably bang out what it doesn't in a single month of sub if you like it. There are lots of measures in place that make it so you don't even need to interact with other players to do the story dungeons and such as well.

But I would argue all the haters are WoWfugees who came to game in 2021 and are now finally leaving. Or it could the fact that the game is now home to a lot of second life players (due to modding) because the the $15/m. How does that part work for DPS? I only did it as healer and tank, first as healer where the doom killed me and I'm gonna blame me being so rusty for not noticing it could be esunaed since I haven't played in like a month and a half, but once you know it should be trivial, then I did it as tank having being warned I need to interrupt, it gave me mountains of time to do it but again being rusty I took so many vuln stacks from being focused on looking for the interupt instead of looking at the floor that I died soon after the interupt, I'm sure I will pull through next time though.

All that said as not that hard as it is those bosses probably should have been slightly less tanky, but the mobs between bosses in that dungeon actually seemed to be less tanky than your usual dungeon mob which is nice, tanky bits between bosses is the least fun part of the game

Hard to answer. I started it a while ago and enjoy it, but in the meantime I finally played VIII and just last year IX which made it sink in FF really has been over ever since. I'm not sure I can go on with the series (mainline at least), especially if we keep straying further away from what it actually was.
That said, I still enjoy this game I started a long-ass time ago and don't intend on stopping it because of how my view of FF has changed (or rather been restored). As a whole it is a very formulaic game, but there can be stuff in there that really appeals to you (personally I straight-forwardly like challenging battle content etc. but all kinds of other stuff you can focus on) and while the FF references can often not quite match the vibe of the original, the spectacle still is nice imo and oftentimes they're heightened by their use in XIV's context.

tl;dr/in conclusion
Just give it a shot. It's obviously got nothing to do with actual FF in structure, but as you can expect there are good and bad things in there if you want to evaluate it on its own. It also gets the criticism of not being a real MMO which funnily enough might be why I could stomach it, but all the better.

I'll play Jack's game eventually but from playing Dissidia a bit on a friend's PSP... fanservice galore yes but I really didn't find it too great at the time. Is it really worth it? I pretty much never do spinoffs, SoP would already be an exception (honestly think FFT and if counting sequels as such XIII-2 were the only other ones in all these years and XIII-2 was because I was still a retarded kid).

The ideas aren't bad, it's more the execution. Not gonna go in depth into my problems with it now, but I can believe the poster above you in that other versions are better. Even the NES version might be enjoyable when you know what you're doing, but for a first playthrough it was just really fucking rough.
