i played a bit of dota, but really got into heroes of newerth which was a dota clone, i REALLY got into that and played it nonstop for a long time. i loved playing chronos (faceless void) and farming for 40 min then ulting and killing 3-4 people in my ult, or playing magnus (sand king) and levelling up the sand ability to farm easily. back then noobs didnt know about the dust that reveals stealth so it was pretty fun

I'm actually not because I don't really care about that. What I am saying is that James has been given an instant get-out-of-jail-free i-frame dodge in a game that doesn't support it.
The reason SH2 remake combat feels bad but people can't articulate why is because placement in the environment actually mattered in that game - it was possible to get boxed in by enemies in a corner and take unavoidable damage so you had to actually think even a little. Not at all in remake where your canned dodge button will always get you out of any situation instantly.
Of course if I WERE going to say the enemy AI was smarter in the original I would start by pointing out that at least the enemies are slightly more unpredictable than the remake ones who as you can see can in the webm will go into this pattern of hit-hit-block without the player even needing to set it up first

I don't think hitstop and camera shake belong in a Silent Hill game at all.
It's something I strongly dislike about the Silent Hill 2 remake, too.
It makes the attacks feel strong and powerful. It's the wrong feeling.
It also makes it "gamey", if that makes sense. It emphasizes the combat in an artificial way.
It's about as immersive as a combo meter showing up when a fight starts.

The remake changed a lot, including a combat overhaul. Without it, you'd literally be unable to fight without dying since enemies don't remain stun-locked. The dodge is fine for it because the combat was made for it, not the other way around with the dodge being slapped on.

Most people would just run and it's still possible to get into those situations despite having a dodge in the remake.
If anything, the only real change the remake had was changing the combat to be more appealing, making each fight less impactful since some would go out of their way to fight.
