Why does /v/ always seem to hate every SMT story there is?
Anonymous No.717477639 >>717479428 >>717479546 >>717480836 >>717485164
I genuinely liked IV's story and I don't know why it gets hated here so much. It's literally the only SMT where I remembered all their names. Haven't played Strange Journey yet.

SMT IV has a great setting. But it has a terrible story. Genuinely, how does witnessing Blasted/Infernal Tokyo lead you to decide, "Yes, I want this." Neutral after the alignment lock also has a few plot holes.

yah i got that but if i'm only gonna play the game one-time-for-the-one-time, then which is a better experience?

Because it's one of the few titles in the series with Anglo names.

Take her hand. Canon of Creation feels much more unfinished by comparison.

If you never played V and are planning on completing it then go with the original then Vengeance. If you're only gonna bother playing it once then go with Vengeance since the story is better.

I generally don't. I especially enjoyed Strange Journey's story, which I consider to be one of the best in the series.

SMTV, even with Vengeance, is not an example of SMT telling a good story. The plot is predictable and filled with poorly used tropes, characters are obnoxious or boring, the Nahobino feels more like a Yes Man throughout the game rather than carving a unique path based on what they believe, the "villains" have little depth to them, and a lot of really interesting world building feels wasted or is dumped into minor, faceless NPC dialogue most players will never see.

I'd imagine most people who actually enjoy SMT probably can pick out a handful of games they enjoyed the story in. People have different opinions of course, in which one person would probably say I have trash taste for thinking Strange Journey has a good story. But most fans still like the stories in these games.

SMTV was just a weak entry in that regard, plain and simple. It's a really solid game, but the story is nothing.

Because it copied everything SMTII already did and did better.

I loved SMT1 and 2 story. It makes the endings seem understandable. SMTA was cool as well but SMTV was dumb.

Nothing changes

>The plot is predictable
The only game with a lot of twists was SMTII
>poorly used tropes
Every single game does this
>characters are obnoxious or boring
Because they're grounded, and yet you still have characters like Dazai, Yoko, and Yakumo to spice things up.
>the Nahobino feels more like a Yes Man throughout the game rather than carving a unique path
Demi took orders from Hijiri for a majority of the game. Flynn took orders for most of the game as well as a Samurai. Aleph also works for the messian church for half the game. The neutral path in SJ is about sticking to your orders and completing your mission.

Your taste isn't bad, it's just clear your opinion comes from not remember what the other games are even about. People especially forget that Demi can barely think for himself.

SJ had the only real story. 4 had the only real characters and 3 had the only real work the player had to do to understand why characters acted the way they did. 1 and 2 don't exist and I put the ds stylus in my urethra. vv was fun and v was boring.

That's the least of the issues. And also you're describing a problem with the setting right in your post.

That's more of a characterization or narrative problem really. If Johnathan witnessed Infernal Tokyo and Walter witnessed Blasted Tokyo, then it'd be possible to understand where they're coming from. Something like mania from steering far into the opposite extreme hellscape.

Because the story in mainline SMT is almost always mediocre.
The themes and settings are often great. But they fumble it everytime when it comes to characters and stories.

It's the opposite case for Persona where they focus a lot more on the characters and stories but the setting is just your generic real world and high school except with some supernatural stuff going on.

I don't think hate is the right word. But it's just so easy to point out the obvious flaws and bullshit the characters spew because they are designed as propaganda spewing machine, trying to sway you. We still love the game for what it is. We all love to play god and decide the fate of humanity in our heads. It's the only franchise that allows it.

I've seen many people argue that VV is the only smt game with actual characters. I never see that argument here though. Same people that say this also write walls of text explaining themselves too. I've never seen that type of effort for other characters in SMT besides maybe IV.
