At the very least, the story in Eternal still revolved around Doomguy solely
The story always moved forward because of Doomguy's actions, just like 2016, and you always got context about why you needed to go to this place and this place, just like in 2016
In Dark Ages, Doomguy feels like an errand boy and like a side character to the story, it feels awful and you can't connect with any of this nonsense
Not to mention the story in Dark Ages is disjointed, you'll often be dropped in a map with no prior information leading up to this, like when you first pull up in Hell for instance, it comes out of nowhere
