It’s become clear to me almost a decade out that the things that made 2016 appealing, especially in presentation, were absolute flukes.

Eternal is mechanically deep but looks and sounds like shit. Eternal looks good but plays weird and the forced MCU ass narrative is annoying. 2016 is a comparatively simple game but it’s a total package. Fun gameplay, looks aesthetically cohesive, and the story is silly, but simple and earnest.

The story always moved forward because of Doomguy's actions, just like 2016, and you always got context about why you needed to go to this place and this place, just like in 2016
In Dark Ages, Doomguy feels like an errand boy and like a side character to the story, it feels awful and you can't connect with any of this nonsense
Not to mention the story in Dark Ages is disjointed, you'll often be dropped in a map with no prior information leading up to this, like when you first pull up in Hell for instance, it comes out of nowhere

There are a few songs in the official soundtrack that *were* put together by Mick, it's pretty easy to figure out which ones just by the fact his work is actually edited well and isn't full of amateurish mistakes, specifically Cultist Base, A Cultist Prayer, The Icon of Sin, The Only Thing They Fear Is You, Welcome Home Great Slayer, Prayer Of The Diminished, Sinister, Command and Control, Meat Hook, The Betrayer, and DOOM Eternal. Glory kills work well with the gameplay loop of nu-DOOM (and yes I know using that term makes me a faggot but it's the best I got). They're quick and encourage playing aggressively. Parryslop encourages standing in place and waiting for
attacks and they got that whole slowmo shit going on which is fucking boring.

I remember when Saints Row ripped off the Glory Kills in the shitty reboot but all the animations take way too fucking long, negating the whole point. TDA is basically that, it missed the point of what made the new games fun in the first place.

in eternal's basic gameplay the only thing you "have to do" is manage ammo well which means vary your weapons and either scavenge pickups or chainsaw if you start getting low

Noone say it is intuitive. It's simply a game design. The game design can be good even if it is not intuitive because it's a video game. There is nothing wrong with the game setting rule and structure for the player. If every game design has to be intuitive, they have to be realistic, which limits the game.

Also, just because the game explain a mechanic, that doesn't mean the player is prohibited from exploring it and using intuition further.
For example, the game tutorial tells you that you can destroy certain enemy weakspot to limit their offense and stagger. The game doesn't tell the player all of the ways the weakspot can be destroyed and players can experiment and find out themselves. The game doesn't tell what the player should do after destroying the weakspot, but the players' intuition lead them to swap to a different weapon to maximize damage on the staggered enemy after its weakspot get broken.
