How did those british blokes manage to make one of the best 2d platformers ever and show up even Mario in his prime?

1. They had experience.
2. They had Nintendo backing and guidance. Miyamoto and others were literally checking their work constantly and giving feedback. Daily faxes back and forth, tons of calls, tons of in-person meetings. Functionally the games were partially made by Nitnendo.
3. The game is designed on Japanese platformer standards and rules, rahter than Euro ones. Euro platformers were slower, and focused on fancy sprite work (think Rayman).
4. nintendo invested a lot into the game, including buying a bunch of SDI computers to make the fancy graphics.

>The game is designed on Japanese platformer standards and rules,
Was it? Weren't Japanese platformers still more focused on generalized tilesets more akin to Mario World than what DKC2 did?

Not gonna downplay Nintendo's hand in its success because they do have extremely high standards and significant input, but Rare's games were always very high quality, even going back to the home conputer days.

Also Miyamoto has always been disparaging about DKC so I do wonder how much influence Nintendo had directly.

Lies. Here are some facts:
Fact 1: Nintendo HATED Rare and would do anything to stop them
Fact 2: Nintendo felt Rare was impinging on their turf with Killer Instinct (KI). Ki = ancient chinese energy.
Fact 3: Rare was initially given the DK ip as a joke, "hahaha what are you going to do with silly monkey" was the sentiment at Nintendo HQ at the time.

Is that part about Miyamoto hating DKC even true or just an urban legend from that one fake Yoshi's Island quote? DKC was a blockbuster at the time, both in the West and Japan.

>Also Miyamoto has always been disparaging about DKC so I do wonder how much influence Nintendo had directly.

That's a strange myth promoted by literally a SINGLE journalist in a book. The short version is that he interviewed Miyamoto and the Rare guy and then published the interview. Accordign to the journalist, as an aside, miyamoto made a disparaging remark about the game which he then published in his book about the history of video games. This is then quoted endlessly.

But is it true? He's never released the audio recording so we can double check what exactly was said. it's not sure he has a complete grasp of Japanese. He could very well have misunderstood some aside comment, and being a European himself, turned it into some kind of grand narrative. So the short version is that it appears to be nonsense.

So we have a guy YEARS LATER saying "oh yeah, Miyamoto totally trashed DKC". I think he was just trying to hype up something he half-heard and remembered as being this big dig, when Miyamoto didn't meant i liek that.

Miyamoto himself has commented on it when asked by IGN years ago, and he was deeply confused by the whole matter.

> Miyamoto: The first point that I want to make is that I actually worked very closely with Rare on the original Donkey Kong Country. And apparently recently some rumor got out that I didn't really like that game? I just want to clarify that that's not the case, because I was very involved in that. And even emailing almost daily with Tim Stamper right up until the end.

This has been debunked a hundred times.
Nintendo, including Miyamoto, very much liked and enjoyed what Rare put out on the SNES and N64.
We have ACTUAL interviews and testamony from both companies on this
>why no buy rare
1. talent bleed. they were losing their best staff, something would know handily
2. loss of confidence in their products. They completely shifted Conker because ONE (1) urinalist mocked it for being too cartoony.
Also jumped off ZDino Planet at the first chance given (no they were NOT forced to use the starfox IP, it was merely offered to them, with the stipulation the new game had to be on GC if so. rare CHOSE to switch over)

Why do you fucking lie?
Same time frame the dev's behind Eternal Darkness were suggested by miyamoto himself to make the game less dark.
Both physically...as in brighten up levels, and tone down some plot things. Plus lessen the horror.
They ignored this sugestion. Launched the game as wanted. And had no consequences.
Stop putting Miyamoto has some gaming god head that smites everyone that questions him.
It's never been true.
End of the day its on the developers for taking on or ignoring said advice.

When you're dealing with Caligumoto, you might be beheaded anyway for saying yes, or because you're wearing a red shirt, or because it's Tuesday. The best-kept secret of the video game industry is that he isn't just eccentric, he is literally insane.

I actually can't fucking stand a lot of DKC's levels. 1 had some pretty tough/annoying levels, but 2 really went balls deep with the gimmicky levels and it just felt agonizing to experience. Both games had so many levels that just felt like they were full "HAHA GOTCHA FAGGOT" moments. I'm assuming DKC3 probably went even farther with dumb as shit level gimmicks.

I should replay the games to see if I was just really fucking awful when I first played them and they'll actually be great this time, or if it sucks as much as I remember. I like the music though, I can't talk shit about that.

based on interviews with rare employees at the time nintendo had more involvement with donkey kong but it seemed to be more on occasion. they also seemed to not give a fuck about anything else they did besides donkey kong.

I think it was like 5 years ago. I remember getting my shit stomped by the minecart level so badly I started laughing because of how hard it was. Same with snowbarrel blast or whatever that level was called. I hated every level involving the animals.

I don't really remember DKC2 doing that. Some levels were unique to a certain world (like the rollercoaster ones) but most of them had normal platforming. Then again it's been multiple decades since I last played a DKC. DKC3 had way more jankshit as I recall. Also the bossfights in DKC3 were ass.

Kinda sounds like you're just not great at platformers, snowbarrel is understandable though. You should give it another go and if you can't handle those two levels in particular just know there's secrets that will blast you through them.
Anonymous No.717488284

NTA but it's about the way the levels are designed. They're easy-to-read obstacle courses with some detours for bonus rooms and items. On the other hand, the typical Western platformer of the era consists of aimless trial-and-error mazes with cheap hits you can't react to.
