Yeah, FF Black Mage is basically the archetype at this point-wide-brim hat, no face, glowing eyes, robe, the whole kit. Everyone’s been riffing on it ever since. Veigar's basically "what if Black Mage got really into being a villain and started posting on /r/iamveryevil." Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if even the Magicka guys started with a Black Mage doodle and just erased the face.

Arx Fatalis is full of profane and mundane sort of magic, and it's great at selling that lower grimier setting. Mouse spellcasting is pretty fun, as well as secret spells.
