Soon you won't actually care what is happening in the plot anymore and all that matters is what it adds to the lore.

For example Nero showing up in Remake is not good for the story, but it IS good for the lore and the theories.
Once you're a fan of FF7 theorycrafting literally everything that happens in the story, no matter what, is good - because it expands the lore. You can apply this to all the FF games and suddenly "bad writing" or "plotholes" simply disappear.

I played the original and I prefer Remake and Rebirth for obvious reasons, mainly the gameplay and presentation. Now I admit they're bloated in terms of unecessary side quests for example, especially in Rebirth, but yeah I wouldn't replay the original in current year that's for sure. The typical japanese turn based gameplay was always trash and it always prevented me from finishing a Dragon Quest game for example

I think "good stories" are just stories that talk to us individually but whatever, the most important things in games are gameplay, presentation, atmosphere and chara design. Sense of adventure ruined. Remember finding the materia caves? The Chocobo Sage's house? The ancient forest? When you left Midgar in the original you had to explore on your own. There was a shitload of missable stuff and you could get lost if you were incompetent. That's what made it feel like exploring a real place instead of running down a checklist of scenes.
