It's like Undertale, but much longer, with improved combat mechanics, moment-to-moment world traversal, and occasionally graphics, but with writing that's much less focused, with plot often faffing about, not as strong themes, not as compelling characters (disregard the coomers' opinions), and not as great overall pacing. Plus there's much less in terms of playstyle impact. Oh, and only half of the game is finished and playable. Yeah I think the writting in Deltarune is way worse than Undertale. Not that Undertale was flawless but it was focused. Also Deltarune's plot comes across as almost smug in a way. Like... 'ooooh things aren't quite what they seem! Isn't this crazy and meta!' It's really just extending it far beyond how far it needs to go, we already got this shit way back in chapter 1. Not so much in the "Oh the characters know they're in a re-imagining of undertale" or something, but there's a lot of thematic connections, leitmotifs, iconography that relate to undertale and twist or enhance their original meaning. You want to have played undertale not because the stories are literally connected, but because the way the story is told will give you a deeper appreciation if you're familiar with undertale primarily.
