Got about 3 hours in, probably some upgrades later to make traversal better but fuck me is the level design horrid, its like a shitty NES game in some places. Like having to platform up a big tower just to get knocked by an enemy right to the bottom again. There's no fall damage so the only real penalty is the waste of your time climbing back up again

Funny thing is I'm just now playing this game for the first time, about 8 hours in. I think this game is fantastic but it's also easily the most overrated game I've ever played. No way is it as good as Super Metroid which is the dominant comparison I've seen on forums. The atmosphere/music/vibe are excellent, but come on...
Hollow Knight has shown me that people will conflate difficulty from lack of/poor design with genuine challenge and depth. HK doesn't respect your time. It's directionless with no clear immediate goal, and the map is large without clever finesse. Just troves of rooms with unending same-y platforming that makes multiple backtracking trips extremely tedious. It's an impressive map, but it wasnt made with much forethought from the 10 biomes ive been in so far. Metroid's backtracking was actually rewarding in that practically every room on the return trip could be shortcut or a new secret could be reached with the new ability you recently got on that path (especially speed/screw attack ability). The designing hand was strong enough so that you didn't feel totally lost in the giant maze with more than 1 backtracking trip, while also being soft enough that following the intended path still felt like a personal feat. There's a fine line between good exploration and pointless wandering hoping you come across something interesting. And I feel like way too many people see those 2 things as being the same in a video game.

Ah yes, the famously simple to read exploration with a clear logical progression and limited confused back-tracking between generous save points. So simple in fact that the walk-through on the game's own wiki is just a list of different named areas because they can't account for the infinite permutations of aimlessly wandering into an area you aren't supposed to be in yet and soft-locking yourself.

I'm genuinely curious how you would get yourself soft locked in hollow knight. You can quit and reload anytime to spawn at the last bench you were at and the game never locks you in anywhere without the item you need to get out being immediately available(I think it did this after you beat Soul Master), and every major area had at least one stage station.

Only way I can think of is getting really unlucky during randomizer, but it explicitly tells you you're expected to also be using the bench warp mod with it so that's moot.
