The only people who say this are braindead executives and hack directors. People have been telling stories with non-human and anthro characters since the inception of humanity, and the reason why lately people haven't related to non-humans is because
a. Non-human characters are written and treated like jokes or freakazoids in tons of "mass" media
b. Social media has degenerated the minds of your average normalfag into a raging narcissist that cannot relate to anyone that doesn't look like the idealized version of themselves
There are tons of franchises with non-human characters that are popular but business people love to gaslit themselves into bullshit because they have zero common sense. Just look at how mods literally pissed themselves when Deltarune chapters 3-4 came out and there were threads non-stop and now DR is back as the biggest fucking thing on the planet in the indie gaming space. And it's all because it has superb character writing even though 99% of the characters are non-humans. Of course I'm going to care way more for Susie Deltarune than fucking Jar Jar Binks. People have lost their shits for 1970s sattelites, incomprehensible aliens, killer monsters, objects, just about fucking everything. Because the people making the media about those things fucking cared.

Yeah, I don't understand where they're getting this sentiment from. Just look at kid's cartoons, half of them are composed of characters which are literally just talking animals and people love it. Sure, they talk and move like humans but stuff like The Jungle Book or Lion King are animals. The only human traits for them are mannerisms and speech, something that's going to come across in most depictions of aliens anyway. Even more abstract forms like those in Wall-E are still really well-liked.
