Agreed. Played a patched version a few months ago. It's amazing how well it holds up for a 20 year old FPS on PC.

The first game is so repetitive, it's only with the second that the levels got more detail and variety. And it actually tried to add horror to a series called "FEAR"

It's kinda mediocre. Like its not even in my top 50 fps, I unironically think serious sam second encounter is more fun to replay, thats how low the bar is. It's very casual, and leans into atmosphere over level design and gameplay. Something to be experienced rather than won. And even then, the only cool part was the stuff with the invisible dudes.
