I thought the plot/characters only got good around the 3rd singularity and peaking with Camelot/Babylonia.

I think that's because they were still figuring out what to do and where to go with the VN aspect.

For me all the Nasu MCs felt like nothing characters.
And I always thought this was the point them being placeholders for the player self-inserting.
Soujuurou is a wet blanket despite having the most background where one absolutely shouldn't be a wet blanket.
Shiki doesnt have a goal or motivation for like 3/4 of the game.
Shirou is barely a character apart from his survivors guilt schtick. Hell, it became a running gag how all the bitches fall in love with him due to him struggling with a rack.
