the question is pseudish itself. what does โ€œnatureโ€ mean? what constitutes โ€œchangeโ€? Is "man" meant biologically, psychologically, morally, spiritually? it sounds cool but it purposefully asks a question which you can't answer/people will just answer it with different definitions in mind. If some anon would make a game with another "profound" theme like "can one live authentically in a world of imposed roles and expectations" with mechanics similiar to planescape torment then you niggers would laugh him out of the room. kek thinking about it, /v/ would meme this theme into being about trannies in this day and age.

what is the nature of a man? if you look at the classic question of nature vs nurture, nature is an inherent quality that can't be changed so asking what can change it is a contradiction. if you look at the context of the game what can be considered part of the nameless one's nature? his stats? his alignment? those are determined by metagame decisions by the player. the question is poorly constructed and the answers the game presents for it are extremely shallow.

I think the question is fairly straightforward.
Nature, as you said, referring to that core of a person's being that precedes all learning, so deep that most times people aren't even really aware of it.
I think that is the reason for TNO to be an immortal amnesiac, through effectively losing all learning between resuscitations he's reset to a factory zero where only his nature remains, granted by the time the game takes place his amnesia is beginning to fade.
I think the point of all those resurrections is for TNO to actually reach a belief powerful enough that it would be able to affect his core. Essentially achieving a nurture that affects his nature

No protagonist in gaming is well written. It's impossible to "write" someone you control which is why I tend to avoid games with voiced protagonists, characters with established backstories, etc. They should be totally mute and have no (or very little) dialogue.
Other characters can be well written though of course.

that interpretation doesn't make sense from a metagame standpoint. one of the first decisions that you can make in the game is whether or not you want to choke a bitch. at that point the nameless one has no memories at all so you can say he is operating completely on "nature," but actually it's just whatever the player feels like. if you accept that you are choosing the nameless one's true nature with your roleplaying, then that means that the previous incarnations who acted differently were acting contrary to their nature rather than having it be permanently changed, since it reset when they lost their memories. if that's the case then the only answer for what can "change" the nature of a man would be memory, which isn't presented as an option.

Belief.

Or rather, belief in anything important to one's self. Its answered in the game.

>If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can. Iโ€™ve seen belief move cities, make men stave off death, and turn an evil hag's heart half-circle. This entire Fortress has been constructed from belief. Belief damned a woman, whose heart clung to the hope that another loved her when he did not. Once, it made a man seek immortality and achieve it. And it has made a posturing spirit think it is something more than a part of me.
