XBone controller improves on it in every way, including a god tier d-pad, but unfortunately they used a cross shaped pad which can dig into your thumb easily.
Series X went back to the circle shape pad while keeping the same metal pad connectors. It's peak comfy and the best d-pad I've ever used. Never even needed to do fixups on it either and I've owned one since it came out. Had to replace the shitass usb-c connector once already, and switch membranes 2-3 times, but the d-pad is indestructible.

It was god tier in 2005 when it came out, since the only other competitor was the USB Sega Saturn controller released in japan only, and the Playstation pad which required adaptors and was a fucking joke as always.
It's only major issue was the d-pad which was... it worked, but wasn't any precise. Series X fixed that in an overkill manner though, it now has the most solid d-pad ever made on a controller. Wish they'd just make the analog sticks and triggers hall effect based, and the membrane for the face buttons easier to switch out.
