The world is actually fairly fleshed out. Like you understand why, for example, a city like Riften exists, what its economy is like, how it functions politically, what the culture and religion is like. Yeah it's kind of stupid that 90% of the region is just bandits, but given there is a low intensity Civil War, that makes sense. Really the only problem with Skyrim in terms of a believable world is the total obsession with dickriding the player by making him the king of every faction. I like the art direction and environmental design, Skyrim can be a very pretty game when it isn't fast routing you into draugr crypts. There are nice moments where you stumble into a nice waterfall in a forest or you reach a high mountain pass while the wind whips past your character. I think both of these factors are a large part of why people are absolutely obsessed with this game in spite of it's generally dogshit gameplay.
