for me, when it stopped being text-only the mysticism went away and all that was left was what looked like boring gameplay

and they didn't listen to me on the forums either, i told them to at least interpolate between world states so you get a little bit of smooth movement. but nope, things just teleport instantly between titles. i think that turned off a lot of people.
creator is still a millionaire now i think so good for him (or them, it's two brothers right?)

because the steam version is fucking butchered, they still didn't give back the original controls and mechanics. Now people are split in playing 0.47.05 and prior and the steam verison. fucking troon dev ruined everything. toady got all the money he could squeeze out of steamcels and took this troon onboard to make it take all the deserved blame. niggers

Dwarf Fortress was great as a proof of concept for that type of game but aside from sunken cost fallacy there is no reason not to play rimworld instead.

designating temporary stockpiles, temporarily adding dwarves to a squad, designating a temporary meeting hall, that stuff is not fun
which is a shame because the game has so many cool ideas. forgotten beasts, strange moods, utilizing giant cave spiders in your trap hallways, adamantite pillars, flooding underground chambers to deposit loam for farming. but you don't do any of that. you kill cats out of line of sight of their owners to stop fps death. it's just cancer

A good chunk of the game's appeal (amongst people who aren't very autistic) came from the jankiness which was fed by stories like Boatmurdered. It was more fun as a game where elephants and carp went on constant murder rampages and the dwarf emotion system was so simple they all acted like insane people. Flash forward almost two decades and that charm has been patched away and the current publishing company seems eager to get rid of what remains of its old "edge" (e.g. trying to stamp out anti-elf sentiment and making dwarves of age at 18 instead of 12).

Toady has been consistently making the game worse since World Activation, he clearly has been prioritizing whatever he wants to do with DF rather than make it actually enjoyable to play.
Compare that to Rimworld where Tynan knows modders carry his ass, and he pumps out frameworks and official adaptations for modders to work with constantly.

1. Major updates that suck all the imagination and fun out of the room
2. Endgame gear is less about tempting fate and greed but trying to be a raid boss for meagre rewards
3. The new shit feels tacked on rather than fleshed out
