Meh. I finally found time to do 7.3 MSQ last night, and I'm going to say it was really fucking good. Given the material they had to work with/fix that was busted in 7.0-7.2, 7.3 was a glorious return to form. It addressed so much feedback from players. It put Sphene front and center, it benched Wuk Lamat, even brought the golden city back to its original form. 7.3 was good. I'm saying it. Fuck you doomers. My only complaint is that I'm sick of the dark gray/neon purple aesthetic. I'm so fucking sick of it. I was already sick of it in Endwalker with the stage 4 relics. And 7.3 was 90% gray/purple and I'm so over it.

I do not think you people understand what Calyx is as a villain. He is NOT a hypercompetent tragic genius of evil on a lonely quest like Hades or a master warrior like Zenos, or even a nihilistic demon like the Fandaniel. He is an insecure idiot who does tons of posturing but cannot walk the walk. In the end, he is just scared of dying and acts accordingly. His entire idea of evolution is just an explanation that has already been rebuked through in-game lore. He is just a memory that does not want to be shutdown, and everything else is a lame excuse to it.

The Primal summoning idea was really good and fit with his theme and ideas (mostly, feeds off a fear from death), but as of everything done by Calyx, it just does not work.

This is an interesting villain because for once we have a dude who is genuinely pathetic. And it is very fun to have a villain who, for once, is scared of us. He is a Light Yagami-like hypocrit character and it is great.

This is what everyone keeps saying, but based on how Calyx explained it the tempered should be irrelevant in the equation. He said that Necron's fear of its own death would trigger the next summoning. It would be weakened by less faith, but it still should have been resummoned according to the concept laid out.

The dynamis in that equation was the faith of Eorzea hoping he would save them. What Louisoix used to gather the aether was the keystone atop Tupsimati. The keystones still haven't been really explained but they're ancient relics that in the original lore were necessary for summoning primals. They're probably something from Amaurot but honestly I think the writers forgot about them. The one Travanchet stole from Y'shtola in 1.0 for example was used to summon Alexander which is why he's so unbelievably powerful.

I was doing the story with my friends and we stopped right before doing the Necron trial.
So far, 7.2's writing was better than 7.3. They're both better than 7.1 and 7.0 by a lot, but still worse than basically any other patch. DT is strongly the worst expansion when it comes to story, among its other flaws.

That said, I did find the little puzzle segments novel and I appreciated that they did something different for quests. I hope it's a sign that they're revisiting quest design in the next expansion and going forward. Too little, too late to save Dawntrail, but for the love of God improve things in the future.

I still like Real Human Bean Sphene. Her and Gulool Ja are the ONLY Dawntrail characters I care about. However, I can feel that they're going to bungle and fail her arc. You have her remarking that she's not Alexandria's queen, that she feels like Alexandria can stand on its own. And you have Lithander giving a speech about how the Alexandrians need to stop relying on somebody else for comfort and stand on their own two feet... But I can tell they're going to make Sphene become Queen, anyways. Because it'd be retarded and soil her entire arc as well as everything with the Alexandrians. It's the most stupid, anticlimactic, and drama-destroying way they can resolve it, so it's GOING to be how they resolve it, because that's how DT resolves every plot thread.

It would be more satisfying for the arc in Alexandria to end with the citizens of Alexandria stepping up to rule themselves without needing a mommy to coddle them, and it would be much more satisfying for Sphene to reject becoming Queen so that she can become a knight and be Alexandria's warrior-protector, being inspired by Otis, Zalenia, and the WoL. I don't even care if she becomes a Scion. It'd just be more fitting for her to become an adventurer of some stripe, and it leaves the door open for her to be more of an ally in future expansions (and DT needs plot threads they can pull on in the future).

Calyx was extremely competent at doing things that he was doing before trying to "Solve Death" and make everyone immortal.

the problem Calyx has, is that he has nothing special to work with, he isn't the smartest being to ever be born, as the tech he is working with is decidedly less advanced than the Allagans, he, or anything he has, isn't uniquely strong or good at fighting, and nor does he have any truly unique magical, or special abilities.

Calyx is the limitation above average brushing up against the elite of the elite, namely WoL's strength and resiliance.

very few entities can really tussle with it, Calyx's plan would have worked perfectly if we couldn't overcome Necron's aura and strength, but we did and that was enough to ruin him, Calyx is more a representation of how insurmountable dealing with the WoL is at this point, if at any point your plan brings you into physical conflict with the WoL, its likely to fail, because no force we know of is left that is exceptional enough to do so.

After Wuk broke the barrier to the memory core, we wasted time watching Alisaie charge her final attack against Necron, and only then he remembered we needed to take out Calyx and of course we did it right at the last second, inadvertendly letting him live. I'm surprised, this for the most part was a decent thread with meaningful discussions. Dump-O tried to derail it early and was ignored out of the thread, I suppose he came back after it reached 500 posts but who gives a fuck.

I was really impressed with the camera work in 7.3, I hope they keep this level of quality going forward and don't revert to nodding and spinning in place.
