No lock-on reticle or any visible hud elements, give the melee swings more impact. Completely remove the dark souls stamina management and dodge button. Delay it an extra year and make the combat slow and janky with enemies hitting like a truck to discourage it but give the player tools to deal with them in creative ways so it doesn't turn into a stealth game. Gradually start giving guns around the halfway mark so there can be some more action sections later in the game and a cathartic feeling after them being such a pain in the ass in the first part of the game.

Make the game much darker too almost pitch black with only a few sources of light and your flashlight.

you start out the beginning of each level with a specific weapon. this weapon (pipe, board with nails, etc) has certain attributes, among them a durability value. you have to make the weapon last for the entire level, no repairs, no crafting to augment it and make it better, it just is what it is, and you can use it to defend yourself to an extent. once it's broken, you're unarmed, and all you can do is run. if an enemy catches you, you can struggle and break free of their grasp, but certain enemies won't even bother grabbing you and will go for the jugular so you have to avoid them or die.

while unarmed, the only other thing you can do is create distractions by throwing small pebbles to create openings to run (you move more silently while crouched). alternatively, you can throw a large rock to temporarily stun a foe. both of these resources are limited, though, and you can't carry an abundance of them, so you'll have to choose between a balanced approach or a larger stockpiling of one specific type so as to maximize a certain approach.

later on you can get a firearm, but it's prone to jamming so it needs maintenance, and it's a small caliber like a 9mm or something, so it's not the type of thing you can rely on to dispatch every foe you encounter. since you're a japanese school girl who isn't trained in firearm safety and marksmanship, it could also be prone to misfire or accidental discharge if you fall on your ass or land from a particularly high fall, as you have to keep it loaded because there's nowhere else but your pussy to stow any excess ammunition. if you misfire and injure yourself, then you're fucked, as it could result in spontaneous death or serious injury, so it's almost as much of a burden as it is a boon.

From what I've seen of the game, one thing I don't like is it appears you go through a good chunk of the game with a fucking pipe as your main weapon. Boring. I know a lot of people don't like that they added a stamina bar and made it more "action based" or whatever. Why is being able to see your health and stamina without pausing the game every 5 seconds bad again? One of the things I liked about gameplay in SH4 is the fact that Team Silent finally figured out that seeing your character's status and switching items on the fly is way better than pausing the game and going to the separate status and inventory menu screen and selecting the right option all the time

Anyway, I was thinking about IMO the spookiest bit of SH lore. Silent Hill wasn't the first town that was settled in that place. The original colony all either died or disappeared, and the name of the town they created was lost to history.

It's just modernized slop for your modern audience in a genre that doesn't benefit from it and is only harmed by it. It doesn't feel risky or scary to engage in combat when I can see all how much ammo is in my gun or how many swings my weapon has instead of idk adding visible weapon wear in the game as well as making my character appear injured so I never know if the next hit I take is my last.

It's a lack of attention to detail and understanding the project and just creating shit that you think appeals to the most people possible in a fucking niche genre that they wouldn't touch regardless. SH was never about the combat, the enemies are just an obstacle that exists, really the main enemy in Silent Hill is the environment. The combat just needs to be serviceable enough to vehicle the game forward. There's really nothing to fix, more focus on combat would take away from the Silent Hill design.
