It's actually a good game played emulated today. I don't know how people could tolerate the authentic 12fps experience on PS2. It felt like a slideshow even at a time when 30fps was widely accepted as playable.

the difference is that SOTC doesn't pretend that the big open fields are important or that they are filled with content. they are there to feel barren and desolate.
didn't play zelda, i have no comment.
elden ring is shit because it pretends to be filled with content when most items you find exploring are butterflies and moss. it was a step down from previous souls games with a high density of good item drops. i have 5 times more hours in every other souls game than elden ring for the sheer fact that the open world lowers the replayability of it.
death stranding is similar to SOTC in that the barren landscapes are serving a purpose. death stranding is supposed to feel isolated and barren. the landscape is also the feature in that game, where traversing it is the whole point. DS doesn't need item drops and NPCs everywhere, that isn't the point of the thing.

I'm a fan of "make the world the game", which BotW does by making the search for hidden secrets the core thrust of the gameplay, and which Death Stranding does by making traversal itself a challenge that has to be approached with thought and planning. This also applies to Stalker, in a jankier sense.
I have pretty much grown to despise the Rockstar/Ubisoft/Bethesda approach of making the main character a walking tank, marking everything of interest on the map, and leaving you to kind of just walk from map marker to map marker, maybe stopping to fight very easy enemies, or pick up some junk on the way. You really do just have a chores simulator at that point.

It is a game that basically fails to improve upon the formula of Dark Souls, and feels like it only includes an open world "just because".
What you get instead of a tightly designed Metroidesque map is a lot of bloat. Including more towns and stuff at least would have made the game feel like something different.

Anonymous No.717540317
>>717539028
Neither. I want a game with somewhat realistic scale but you don't walk it all through but rather travel in 'global map' mod like in M&B until you reach a point of interest or run into encounter then a location loads / zooms in from the map view and you play and navigate it normally. Kinda like fast travel in KCD.

I think Little Devil Inside was attempting something like it but this game is pretty much dead at this point.
Anonymous No.717540321
Some games are worth playing to understand the intent behind their development.
Entertainment comes from the creative process as such there can be more value to an incomplete work, it gives the player the ability to imagine what the game could've been.

>item drops
meaningless items. it is all filler, but it doesn't really matter. the item drops are either "lost cargo" that you can deliver for a couple extra likes or some sort of resource for crafting shit. but crafting the roads actually makes a meaningful change to gameworld and items degrade so fast that it is necessary to have the option of a way to get more materials to craft new weapons/vehicles/etc. but you aren't going "man, i must explore every inch of this world to make sure i don't miss that legendary sword that i need for my build that might be tucked away in the back corner of the map!" in the same way that you must do for something like elden ring.
>npcs
you see other porters rarely and all they do is wave and maybe give you a tool or more cargo to deliver. they are meaningless background noise, the don't give quests, you don't have to talk to them, there is never any indication that you actually have to interact with them at all. technically mules and terrorists are also npcs, but they are enemies and you should have the reading comprehension to know that isn't what is being spoken about when i am talking about things meaningful to the quest/gameworld. you are still isolated when there are mules and terrorists about, you are not part of that herd.

Games are open world to avoid having to sit at loading screens between areas. That's the most common reason, it's the simple progression of game development.
Anonymous No.717542000 >>717543386

elden ring was worse than what came before because they opened up the world without making any meaningful changes to the rest of the formula to justify opening the world up. it was still dark souls in every way that mattered except now they had a big, empty, open world. a hub city/more friendly NPCs would not have fixed this either.

Yeah the parts where you fight the bosses are fun, not really the parts where you hold forward and slowly move across a huge empty field. You can call it "setting pace" or whatever but if the whole game was just those parts it wouldn't be a fun game. It would barely be a game at all.
