You can do something like this. Half a belt means its effectively moving items at half speed. Or just position your drills differently. Fun things to experiment with early game.

Oh and additionally, even if you want a half filled belt of coal *later*, like let's say you have like 20 furnaces lined up with half ore/half coal down the middle, if you split a full belt of coal at the beginning you can split it in again half way down the line to effectively create a nigger rigged red belt out of yellow belts. So there's a lot of advantages to maximizing throughput.
