The Wii feels more futuristic than modern consoles. The PSP and Vita also seemed like cool future gadgets at the time, and still do. Why have we gone backwards?

no it doesn't. wii feels pretty archaic overall. ps and switch have motion controls build in anyways which was the only "futuristic" thing about wii. otherwise it was basically just gamecube.
also you have pocket gadgets nowadays that do 1000x the things psp or vita could do.

The Wii was a shitty plastic toy that has exactly zero (0) good games and whatever decent games it had are better with no waggle.
It was what killed old Nintendo and it oppened the gate to millions of casuals flooding tbe videogame market.

The normal pipeline for 90s kid was:

I kinda get what you mean. The change from the PS2 to newer generations felt huge. The idea of smartphones or handheld consoles you could fit in your pocket was insane compared to the tiny phones that existed before. I remember getting an Ipod touch when I was 12 and it felt like magic.
Nowadays though even though my phone is much stronger I just do the same things I used to do back then. Browse the internet, receive messages, emails, use the calendar, notes. There's no new function, it's simply more bloated than before. And even though the ps4 is 12 years old I can still use it just fine to play the stuff I want. I think AI is probably the next thing that will feel actually new, but even then it still kinda sucks now

I mean design wise that era of consoles were made in an era were futurism was seen as hot and cool by companies, now most companies either don't even consider it or interpret futurism in the most looser tech bro way possible.
