The most understated reason why the ending was bad is that people seem to to forget that the establishment of the Attack Titans ability to see into the future. Though, that still means that everything was predetermined and intentional because of the visions that Eren saw. He saw all that and just half-asses it towards the end? We get he did it because he wanted to make his friends heroes for defeating the monster ravaging the world but he didn't even come close to the intended goal. Devastating the world enough that they wouldn't dare attack Paradis Island. That was proven wrong when they carpet bombed them not long after he was gone. I think the worst part about the final arc and ending isn't even that Eren lost, rather it's the fact that the narrative took every step to slowly dismantle his motivation/personality, figuratively lobotomizing his character in the process.
