Stubby boxart Mario looks great in artwork but he'd look pretty bad as a 3D model.
That red overalls Mario would basically look like a sphere in motion. Made sense that Nintendo gave him a more defined human shape in 64 and especially in the Gamecube era.

I always liked the inverted Red/blue. It might literally be why I stopped using Mario In Smash Bros when they took it away.

the one of the left is Giuseppe, aka 'jump-man'. He's the original 'hero' in the world until he eventually retired. Mario is just picking up the pieces he left. That's why Crank Kong ended up as a king with his son being the the new muscle for the kingdom
