A boss isn't just a self-contained test of the player's skill and game knowledge, it is the capstone of an area or dungeon and serves as the final point of attrition of the player's resources. The ability of the player to prepare adequately for the boss and to reach the boss with those resources intact is as much a part of the boss experience as the fight itself.
