What's the difference between this series and The Godfather's? I only played The Godfather back on PS2, but I enjoyed it.

I recently played trilogy and the 1 and 2 were good (i played remaster of 1 and OG 2 not the remaster of that one)

I played both
Mafia is much more grounded and realistic, slower paced gunfights with very lethal damage. Slower plot and more atmosphere like driving around and realistic traffic laws.
The Godfather game is also good and ties into the plot of the movie but feels more arcadey but has some fun early open world stuff and you can customize your outfit.
I enjoyed both but the only similar thread is open world and italian mafia theme

But from quick glance Mafia is more linear game aka you will be railroaded from 1 mission to other while Godfather seems more open and 2nd game has some managment shit

The godfather games, just like the Scarface games, are largely inspired by grand theft Auto.

Mafia 1 was actually under development at the same time as gta3, though I believe GTA made it to market before mafia. Primary difference is that it's not nearly as focused on its open world. It's more of a narrative experience. The game is separated into different chapters, and in that chapter you usually have a single mission. Inbetween times objectives you can explore the world, but it largely expects you not to. It does have a free roam mode that utilizes the open world in 1. But it largely was a very different style game than godfather. Mafia 2 as mentioned earlier, was taken over by take2, and they butchered every part of the game they could, even cutting free ride. However, it's largely the most liked title in the franchise because of the style, decade (50s), and potential. Currently there's a fan mod that's pretty far along into development that's trying to bring back all the content that was cut (and later sold as cash grabbing arcade dlc shit) into mafia 2. If that at all sounds interesting to you, look up Mafia II: Final Cut.

Remake of 1 is great, no reason to play the original.
2 is kinda meh, doesn't have a real ending and the DLC are absolute garbage.
3 is great but very repetitive and overly long, if you can't stomach playing it, I would recommend playing the demo, cause it's by far the best part of the game.

Literally a non-issue, there's like 5 mirrors in the game.
Actual problem is retarded objectives, like "steal 3 cars" and the game auto-routes you to to the furthest one, but if you look at the map you can find another super close, and for some stupid reason it respawns so you have to do 4 missions which is "go back and forth 3 times getting this specific vehicle for me". They somehow managed to make worse missions than Rockstar.

You aren't remembering correctly. The original ported to consoles was considered okay. They were the absolute worst versions of the game with excruciatingly long load times. The PC version is often considered a classic, and ends up on /v/ recommended games lists all the time. Just pirate a gog copy of it. If it's too eurojank for you, try the remake.

Play the definitive editions of Mafia and Mafia 2. Mafia 1 DE is one of the best video game remakes of all time, it is literally better in every way than the OG version while still retaining what made the game great. Mafia 2 is a great followup. I' need to replay Mafia 3 but i remember that game having a great licensed soundtrack of 60s songs.

I copped the Definitive Edition on PS Plus some time ago but only got to play it this year. It's biggest problem is that it was so obviously padded with shitty side objectives that you need to do to get to the big set pieces in the story. Every new area you have to take over has you shooting up warehouses, sniping a guy, and capturing informants. Same thing over and over again for like 9 areas. It's a shame because the DLC showed that they can actually make good scripted missions but I guess they just overcorrected on one of the criticisms of Mafia 2 being a 10 hour game with nothing else to do outside of the story missions.

The music, the voice acting, the driving physics, the car damage, they reworked everything from the ground up and it's not all an upgrade. The story is literally different. The demeanor of the characters are different. I don't even understand why they changed 95% of what they changed.

Like the shooting mechanics are improved.... good... by why is the music different? Why is the character dialogue different? It should be called "Mafia: Reimagined" or something.

I can't even say Mafia: The Definitive Edition is a bad game, per se, but as a fan of the original, they messed with things that really shouldn't have been messed with. The original Mafia has a very unique 1930s vibe to it. The atmosphere is something every gamer should experience. The newer version has a very mundane/generic atmosphere. That 1930s vibe is all gone.
