It's reasonable to be upset at the death of the AA space however, now we're caught between oversized mass appeal junk and super low budget indie stuff, both of which ironically suffer from long dev times. The death of dedicated handhelds was the final nail on the coffin for AA games.

Games have been trying for a while now to appeal to a broader audience, which means they often add and take things away in order to attempt to make the game more likeable to the general public, and not just the tradish diehard, nerdy afficionados that gamers are usually painted as. This includes things like making the game easier (more casual), add cultural elements that are popular at the time the game is released, take things from previous titles that could potentially be seen as problematic, etc.
