I was exceedingly bored of video games. Tried everything. Different genres of single player games. Different genres of PvP games. New games. Old games. So I took a years long break of playing anything, thinking that I was just burnt out and playing too much. I came back. And I still can't get into anything. Nothing has the same magic that it did when I was a little retard hyped up that my older brother picked up a copy of Halo 3 at midnight launch. Or playing Age of Empires on the family computer. I've tried playing games that made me so happy back in the day. But nothing works. Nothing new works either.

I pretty much only ever hop onto something when my IRL friends want to play something, but that's mainly because anything could be used as an excuse to converse with them. We could kick a rock around and have the same amount of fun.

I just don't get it. I'm still into other childish shit like anime and manga, so why does it feel like I'm growing out of video games?

Maybe you're thinking too hard, and pressuring yourself to enjoy it instead of letting it happen.
Don't overlook changing your gaming environment as a way to keep things fresh. It can help get out of a rut.

You just gotta find the right game. I find little joy in most games too. I feel like every time i start a game, i just think how ive already played it in some form or another. But every so often i play something that scratches the itch. Usually a game that doesnt waste time getting to the meat of the game. Too many games start with a two hour intro/tutorial or slowly introduce concepts/mechanics over the course of hours instead of throwing most of it at you all at once and expect you to play and figure out how it all fits together. Party games do a decent job at keeping me invested as well, because there is no loot/level grind that lots of other multiplayer games have. Generally, i know what i am about now and will gladly drop a game an hour into it if it hasnt struck a chord with me at that point. I do find enjoyment from completing games, though. Shit like howlongtobeat lets me see what i should play next to get a few quick hits in of shorter games from my backlog before i move onto a longer game. Indies have also been great and not letting myself get caught up in this retarded fight against "nongames" like walking simulators or VNs.

Probably because modern games are fucking shit
also video games are all about performing some type of activity to accomplish something to release dopamine in your brain
Your brain has reached a point where it no longer finds such activity thrilling and thus no dopamine release for you

Anime and manga isn't about doing anything but reading and watching characters engage in story-lines. It requires nothing but observation so dopamine release can still be acquired.

The problem is that most games don't have any substance. They're all "potential". The idea of playing them is more fun than actually playing them. This is great when you're a wide-eyed youngster, and awful when you're a jaded old man who knows that after playing the game for 50 hours he's just going to be disappointed.

Games also have a really bad return on your time investment. You mention anime, but you can watch like 100-200 episodes of anime in the time that a single video game demands. It's just not efficient. It's why the best return on investment comes from short story-heavy games, because those are closer to actually just reading a book or watching an anime.

Also, because games are all potential and no substance, something unintuitive is that the more you want to play a game, the harder you should try to resist playing it. Those are the sorts of games that addict you for 40 hours and you come out the other side feeling like you wasted two weeks. Instead, you should try to think of the game you want to play least - whatever sounds like the biggest pain in the ass to learn, or some shitty AAA title you'd never normally look twice at - and play that.

Anime and manga are also hand-drawn by a small number of people with a ton of intention and work put into every single image. Video games are the sort of thing where the dev changes a single number from 10 to 30 and triples the length of his game.

Clearly you just don't value interactive entertainment anymore.

Passive media that requires only reading or watching is much more palatable because you don't need to tryhard or exert any effort whatsoever to obtain value from the entertainment.

For games, this is something that is required in order to get value from it. You want to win or progress. That's the entire point. Even walking sims usually require puzzle solving. With an anime, you sit back with a drink and watch it and you're progressing. With a book, you sit back with a drink and occasionally turn a page, and you're progressing. This is so much more enticing to the average joe compared to playing a game and using whatever synapses are still firing after working your 9-5 trying to get past a certain boss in a single-player game or dealing with braindead teammates against a team of sweatlords in a multiplayer game.

You're getting older. You value your free time more. In reality, most people tend to find a more "productive" hobby and drop video games because, at the end of the day, what are you really accomplishing? If you want to see how the story plays out, you can just watch the cutscenes on YouTube. If you like the lore or the character designs, there are wikis and boorus for that. If you just want to hang out with friends, you can do literally anything and still socialize. It doesn't even have to be a "grown-up" hobby. You can draw. At least you're producing art. You can cook. At least you're learning how to make your own meals (girls also love a man that can cook). When you play a video game, you're really just wasting time. And that's how most people treat the medium. It's like this quaint thing that they'll indulge in for an hour or two and then forget about it. Because that's all it is, really. The most popular games are braindead phone games played by middle-aged soccer moms waiting for their kids in the parking lot.

It's fine to let games go. You had your fun. But you've moved on.

>You can draw. At least you're producing art.
a couple of months ago, i dropped video games for the most part and spent time learning how to draw and i can unironically say that i'm having way more fun than getting pissed at having plastic 3 teammates in cs

holy shit what a game changer that was. mainly just hang out in drawfag threads now on this board and it's kinda nice.

I sorta came to this epiphany back in 2023 when I realized that I really like the designs of female fighting game characters, but never in my life want to play a fighting game.

So then I thought, "Well, I can just goon to these characters or watch cutscenes of them on YouTube and still get what I want out of their game."

And I sorta never looked back. I forced myself to play through Dark Souls 1. Was about to start Dark Souls 2 when I came to this realization. So instead of actually playing the game, I looked at the boss fights on YouTube and read up on the lore and had a fun time doing that. And then I jerked off to Gwynevere rule 34.

Life's never been better. Barely play games now. But I can still talk about the stories or discuss how hot Eve is (and goon to her). I got through the entirety of the Metal Gear series in a weekend when it would've taken me a month otherwise. It's so much easier to enjoy video games by forcing it to be a static medium and enjoying it with no input on your part.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good portion of /v/ are oldfags that don't even play video games anymore. And if they do, it's very rarely.

I'm one of them. I just browse out of force of habit. Oddly enough, I'm just like you and still watch anime and read manga. It's just a lot more relaxing.

Super oldfag here. Almost 40. Still watch anime and read manga.

I think it really just boils down to the fact that video games require interaction. The less free time you have and the less stress you want in your life as you get older, the more you opt for things that require no dedicated effort on your part to enjoy. Anime and manga? You just watch or read. I don't have to sweat my ass off to win a match or die several times in a row to learn a boss's patterns. I just sit back and enjoy.

i think 1 is kind of boring to play. 2 is kind of fun, but still has too many holdouts from the first game to be super enjoyable. 3 is one of the best games of all time. 4 would be good if there was a higher gameplay to cutscene ratio. PW is great little bite sized pieces of gameplay. GZ is phenomenal for 30 minutes. TPP is also one of the best games ever made.

If you've reached this point of realization and still enjoy manga and anime I think it's safe to say that it isn't about the perceived level of maturity of the entertainment, it's the type of entertainment.

Video games require you to interact with, anime and manga do not. Most people don't play video games for this specific reason. And those that do very often grow out of it for this same reason.

You're no longer little autistic Jimmy longing for bing bing wahoos. You just want a good story and good characters. Something you can get from watching a movie or reading a manga.

Im 2006 and ill be honest, though I have been playing since I was 7, I was losing my passion to keep on playing even though im still young. I played through some games example Witcher 3, TLOU1, GOW 2018 and I literally didnt care and was bored out of my mind while playing them, but then I played E33 and KCD. Thats when I realized that I was just playing shitty games at first and I actually genuinely loved playing these 2 and it revitalized me and sparked that interest in games again. I also realized something that I fucking despise these slow writing slog games that take 10 hours to get good, where as KCD had me hooked in the first cutscene where the Cumans first invade, and E33's first Gommage and worldbuilding
