Microsoft and Sony are tech and media corporations, they're greedy.
I don't know if Nintendo will follow suit, especially since there will still be a market for $500 pre built machines that rival in performance with $2000 rigs. If anything, the next Nintendo machine may take the footsteps of PlayStation and be high end hardware.

it's really not complicated

AAA gayming is unsustainable, nintendo understood that twenty years ago and cultivated an entirely different business model centered around mid to low budget games released regularly, that makes them far more resilient than the other two because their development pipeline has been solidified since the merging of their home and handheld systems and their audience is willing to buy smaller games en masse guaranteeing profit

look at tomodachi life for next year, it's basically a hd 3DS game and it'll likely outsell sony's next open world cinematic masterpiss with the japanese dyke

Sony and Xbox will both be making some kind of hybrid gaming PC + console hardware in the future. Xbox already from next year, Sony might wait until the PS7 generation, but it's inevitable. This is a win for all of us so we can get better PC hardware cheaper.

Physical media, exclusivity, and convenience used to be the answers but the current generation doesn’t put the entire game on their discs or offer physical versions at all, ports all their exclusives to PC, and only offers minor convenience over downloading PC games. Consoles have their place but they way they have been behaving there really isn’t a point unless you want to play games for cheaper than a gaming PC would cost

It really is only marginally better. Digital Foundry is one of my favorite channels and sometimes the best they can find is improved resolution in puddle reflections or improved ambient occlusion. It’s not enough to make normies want to build a computer when they could get a console for the price of the GPU alone. Most people just use their laptops as a computer anyway and don’t see the point of a desktop

>what caused the buckbreaking of both sony and xbox?

Xbox's death was self-inflicted. Sony copied Xbox because they have no ideas of their own.
The fatal mistake for both was giving up the exclusive-driven model that has always been the only proven way to sell consoles. XBone had zero games that were ONLY available on XBone. Zero. Everything was ported to Windows. PS4 and 5 had only marginally more real exclusives than that.
>b-b-b-but it was an outdated business model!!!
Outdated how? Because it worked? Because some faggot consultant said so? It is the ONLY proven way to sell consoles You have to hold good games hostage on them and forcibly isolate a market for yourself.

You don't buy a Nintendo console if you dislike their first party games.
Unlike the PlayStation where nobody ever gave a shit about their first party offerings it was always about the third parties. This is the truth despite what SONY zoomer revisionists around late 2010s started spouting.

SONY simply cashed in being a mega corp that could outspend their competition whose entire revenue was pretty much video games. They baited SEGA into a direct battle they genuinely could not afford to win and have been seething since the Gamecube days the failed to do the same with Nintendo. Now their business model is fully unsustainable and is swallowing them alive, based Yamauchi had the last laugh.

The last laugh will be Valve's once they launch their rumored Steam living room console.
They'll supplant both XBox and PlayStation systems as the living-room go-to, while having their full ecosystem of game titles available to them. And they'll cement Steam as an even bigger household brand and defacto monopoly than it already is.

Steam users (and PC users in general) are used to not owning what they buy, and that helps Sony shift to fully digital and getting completely rid of that pesky second hand market. There's more money to be made that way, and they gain more control over the games they sell.

Is that supposed to prove something? it did outsell xbox and it has some exclusives. The problem with those exclusives is that they're few, tremendously expensive to make and most of them arent much different or better than multiplats avaliable elsewhere.

People no longer buy a playstation for anything that isnt sports games or GTA. Exclusives are the sprinkle on top, but that sprinkle has become less atractive each year.

And im glad that sony released astrobot because it seems like an actual good exclusive, but they cant expect it to make GTA numbers on the fifa machine they've been fostering.

They're unable to move games, PS5's attachment rate is dog shit. Everyone's addicted to endless GAAS slop.
Imagine pumping billions into RND, manufacturing, shipping and everything just to provide a platform for Fortnite and Minecraft and other decade old games.
Imagine spending the entire duration of a console generation working on a single game and it ends up selling just fine.
I'd feel cucked, too.

Consoles basically died in the 2000s, since they got so massively overtaken by consumer PCs.
Microsoft stuck around to achieve market dominance and pull some illegal shit.
Sony stuck around because they got lucky with their DVD player and are retarded.
Nintendo at least has their brand, but the others are completely at the mercy of a dead market that is mostly being milked by scammers.

The Steam Machines failed because they were all outsourced to third parties using non-standardized specs and the whole 'Steam Machine' label was basically a self-certification that they were _supposed_ to work well with Steam and PC games of the time - whereas many actually didn't because hardware vendors didn't give a single fuck outside of the marketing potential of being able to (ab)use the Steam brand name for their own gains.

Valve's new rumored project is an in-house developed machine. Basically a Steam Deck - except using a game console / settopbox form factor. Which will have much more rigorous quality control and being actually well-standardized offers a better platform for developers to gauge performance of their titles against as well.

>Didn't most recent Sony reports revealed their software sales are 80% digital?
Yes. Which is one of the reasons the Dutch are suing them for anti-competitive practices over how they only allow their own PSN Store on the platform; and how they rigorously control all pricing of anything sold through that storefront, essentially disowning publishers and developers in the process and putting out severely overpriced offers to consumers.

In case that doesn't sound familiar to you:
It's the Epic -vs- Apple play. They're gunning to have Sony be forced to open up PlayStation to alternate storefronts.
Except here, the Dutch have the EU and the Digital Markets Act on their side - meaning they have really, REALLY good chances of actually pulling it off.

Similar cases are also being prepared in 3 other member states, though their names escape me at the moment.
And iirc it was Poland that already had Sony Interactive Entertainment under active investigation for cartel pricing.

More than anything else, the reason they're going full multiplatform officially, is probably because they realize that the writing is on the wall and they'll be forced to open up in the future anyway. And already going into the transition of becoming a more open community services platform might help mitigate the hammer coming down on them in future lawsuits.
