I want to make an open world roleplaying game set in a fictionalized China that blends most of the century from the Taiping Rebellion all the way through WW2 into one setting.

>various warlords all controlling different provinces
>communists guerillas fomenting their revolution all over
>nationalists trying to suppress the warlords and unite the provinces
>crazy religious cults that have tens of millions of followers trying to form breakaway states
>constant civil war
>everyone at war with everyone else at all times
>different levels of tech all mixed together, with armies of peasants armed with spears fighting against soldiers armed with the latest WW2 era weaponry

the odd world games will give you a good idea about the average chinaman's life experience

Chinese wuxia/xianxia settings are pretty cool but I have yet to see them translated well to English at all, the dialogues in these games always feel really clunky and unnatural. Even chink games with a western setting also suffer from the same syndrome.

Murders on the Yantze River is a pretty decent detective game set during the turn of the century. I never finished it because I got distracted but I just watched the Detective Chinatown movies (which I'll recommend) so I might get back into it.
