That was just a byproduct of the late 90's edge, which was more authentic in every way.

Maybe the aesthetic, but not the games themselves. Out of the three in your image, only one was actually good. Two Thrones was platform blandness at its peak and Werehog stages in Unleashes were some of the most underbaked GOW clones I've ever seen.

There's a reason why that died out beyond the obvious, devs simply didn't have enough ideas to keep the concept fresh.
