To me, Death Stranding is about anxiety and learning to enjoy life. Itβs the first βle quirky game about depression xdβ Iβve ever seen done right. Sam has DOOMS and is a Repatriate (is extremely autistic) and is the only person who can bring people together and help rebuild America but first he needs to reconnect with himself. On the other hand thereβs people like Higgs who only see their situation as a curse, and uses it to spread misery around the world. If youβre born with severe autism, you have a choice to either make the best of it or the worst of it, itβs entirely up to you. Thats what this game is about, itβs about making the best of the worst situation and staying hopeful about the future in spite of how hopeless it looks.
Right in the beginning the game puts you in one of the most hopeless and depressing settings in videogames. Humanity is dying, everyone is retreating into their isolated corners of the world to die slowly, and we need someone like (Sam) to use the power of autism to bring us together. Sam needs to get over himself and understand he has a duty to the people as a person blessed with his curse. Many people have dozens and dozens of βordersβ of feelings and emotions they want to share with each other but only Sam is capable of carrying them from person to person. Heβs the only one that can connect and bring people together.
The game is mostly chill and very relaxing to play 90% of the time but occasionally and sometimes out of nowhere the game will throw you into very stressful situations and youβll usually be severely underprepared to deal with them but yet you manage to pull through in the end.
And in a vidya industry and society in general where weβre programmed to hate one another and feel dreadful about the future, Death Stranding felt like such a breath of fresh air.
It teaches you to be brave and push on even when youβre at the end of your rope. To keep on keeping on
