Devs genuinely do this because they think once they've "secured" fans with a previous entry they'll buy any new game they shit out, so they believe pandering to people who hate their games or hate games in general is the best way to increase sales. This is exactly what happened with the Dragon Age games pandering to sjws that don't play games while continuously alienating their own audience with every entry.
