If Shadow is as fast as Sonic and Sonic could keep up with Shadow's motorcycle, why is Shadow driving a vehicle slower than his own running speed?

Is there actually standardized human sizes and shapes in the Sonic universe?
As far as I know every game in the series has an unique style for their humans. Adventure, Unleashed and '06 all feature radically different looking humans.
