The difference is that you are expected to die to the bosses multiple times.
Obstacles in the level design are far less likely to kill you repeatedly as they're more often than not only lethal due to lack of knowledge.
If I get killed by some cheeky enemy placement or an explosive shot from the distance, that's reasonably only going to get me once, thus forcing me to runback to the place where I died is only a minor inconvenience.
This is especially true as most deaths outside of boss arenas are actually caused by exploration. You're more likely to engage with normal enemies (and risk being killed by them) your first time through an area. This is because you will want to kill everything to make looking around for loot easier.
Once I've picked everything up in an area, I can confidently just run passed all obstacles without worry, making getting back to the previous death point a non-issue.
Bosses are actually challenging and you are expected to die frequently to them, meaning far more runbacks.
Also, nine times out of ten, the runbacks to bosses end up being devoid of any serious threats, most often due to shortcuts, so there's really no challenge presented in that timeframe, just frustration.
Runbacks are simply obsolete and the only value ever given is esoteric, pretentious bullshit that artsy types spew because they think it makes them seem deeper than they are.

This is bullshit. This is the part of the game where the devs decided to just give up and stop fucking with you.
Thankfully, I am going for the fire mage build, so those gotcha trees go down in two hits.

Spear doesn't counter, it's just a fancy dodge with a follow up.
Longsword counter blocks and staggers the enemy and follows with a strong stab that staggers humanoids. It makes her phase 1 painfully easy but you still need to learn phase 2.
Overall you should fish for backstabs anyway no matter the weapon.

The only extra part is for the dream ending, where you have to do the old mans quest, which means doing Avian Dwelling and then actually having to run through Bo Capital and getting to the door to fight Demon of Obsession. Aside from that you just have to unlock the shortcut at the start of Hillswatch to pick up the scarf from the grave, otherwise all of Fang Yao and He Youzai's appearances are on the main path. Maybe you might have to do Bai Kru for He Houzai's quest but I think all of this only adds maybe 1 hour max.

With fire longsword, I tempered while still up, dropped down, run up to her and slashed her twice, dodged behind her back to avoid the homing magic shit and charged-R2 backstabbed her.
Then I hit her trice and used L1 fire special while she was trying to stand up.
That's 25%+ HP down right at the beginning.
Gained some distance and fished for another backstab.
When she's at 50% she'll take a while to 'switch modes' so wail on her till you're stamina is depleted but beware, once she floats up she'll do an explosion which can kill you so gain some distance before that happens.
If you hit her hard during her phase 2 transition, you only have to backstab her once more and then maybe hit her couple of times to finish the fight.

Gaming is unironically healing. Here's some blanket advice:

I put dodge on L1 and spells on L2 and it made the game vastly easier. I did have to practice to get used to weapon skills on B and Y, but that's not dissimilar to MonHun or other action games. This is so you can run circles around enemies while retaining full camera control.

You can hold the item button to quickly use anything equipped. Items are INSANELY strong. You should be tempering before every hard fight. You should be equipping buns or pills for extremely fast and safe minor heals. There are thousands of cheap knives you can hold that will poison, chill, or poise break enemies for tons of free damage or slowed down movesets. Hate corruption swamps? Just put a goddamn flower in a quickslot and never worry about it again.

Spells are a little harder to use, because they scale with stats you won't have much of early on and cost sky might, so it's hard to practice using them properly. If you ever want to try all the shit your capable of, just respec to 1H sword, let biding time stack up some feathers, and try everything out. Alacrity is busted. Echo of Lu Bingzhong is busted. Mid game, pick up -1 feather cost at 50% madness and +1 feather refund on alacrity, then stack feathering stats and ABUSE THAT SHIT.

4 item slots isn't enough. 2 are always occupied by flask and temper. Most areas and bosses have 1 or 2 status effects so you want a cleansing item, and a dagger to deal with the cuckoos. Most bosses only do one or two obvious damage types, and if you're getting wrecked in two hits, you're wearing the wrong armor. Swords do slash/stab. Big axes actually do blunt. Monsters with claws can do some slash, but are actually mostly blunt. If it's big and smashes, it's blunt damage. If it shoots blue shit at you, it's magic. If it shoots red shit at you, it's feathering. You can stack up to 40-50% mitigation against a damage type, and then transmog it with whatever slutwear you want.

This game is Bloodborne. Every single weapon tree gives you a skill to quickly charge a heavy attack, and heavy attacks from the back stack up huge posture break (instant break against humanoids). Magic isn't notably stronger than anything else really, and dodging is tied to way more than "mana" for spells. All bosses have specific gap closing attacks too, I just don't know if you really tried anything else.

Parrying builds up tons of stagger, gives you a free skyborn might, and access to a stab on LS that is easily one of their strongest attacks. Stab attack relic, starter weapon, benedictions that boost counter attacks, watch the fucking chunk you take off their health with every counter stab. Against punches and kicks, just dodge or abuse crescent arc/alacrity i-frames. There's less reward on Axe, but you're more likely to hyperarmor and leech trade on Axe anyway.
