Only hori shmups I've ever really tried seriously were Deathsmiles and Harmful Park and I gotta say that even if it's old Gradius 1's fucking fun. Haven't tried the others yet.
One question, is it a bug of the port or a bug of the original that lasers just dont do anything? Whenever I use an upgrade on them they don't kill enemies at all, I have to stick to double shot.

I think I can like all styles of shmups, but I can't really go earlier than late 80s and still find it honestly enjoyable for more than 10 minutes. Early 90s games already had a lot of rough or plain boring ones, once you get to mid to late 90s it's ludo after ludo though, and 2000s bros were eating good with CAVE. Which is to say, I certainly like danmaku.

Gradius unfortunately falls outside of this range, it shows its age with things like the checkpoint system giving no fucks about how difficult recovery might be(I would say no miss'ing the entire thing is literally easier than recovering, with some exceptions), boss fights being filler(hell the first game always used the same extremely boring boss enemy) and glaring blindspots. I thought Gaiden was neat tho.

Said it in this thread already but I think there's a few areas of Gradius, at least the first game that are pretty stupid. There's this one section before a boss that basically requires all options and the double shot, otherwise you are almost certainly just going to die. Then there's the moai section, which I have actually gotten pretty good at but can trip you anyway. Then another section with enemies shooting from the top and bottom, except it's kind of tight so you either have a shield or just fucking die, except if they hit you in the wrong place you die even with one. Gaiden does kick ass however and Salamander was a good evolution of the style, glad to see a new one.
