The theming could have worked, but Shrek The Third is genuinely dogshit, regardless of how you feel about Shrek's "I don't want to be a ___ (dad)" crisis. It works in Shrek 2 for the most part, and it's not awful in Shrek Forever After, aside from feeling majorly rehashed by that point. But I agree that it's weird that the writers for the sequels chose to focus on what seemed like a very minor character trait (insecurity / outcast mentality) from the first movie.
