It was a cheaper alternative to bluray players ($1000+ at the time), a multimedia player, and the launch models could play your PS2 library with a "HD" digital video out.

A good deal if you wanted a multimedia device for your brand new modern flatscreen TV but you'd have to be an idiot to buy it for a CRT since it had no games.
