They do.

For some bizarre people just pretend they don't.

Reminder, Valve fought furiously against having to give refunds in court. They were the last of the online platform to finally agree to it. After being fined. And then after getting finally agreeing to do what was legally required of them they then had to balls to go to court and say "Fine. We're doing it now. So we shouldn't have to pay that fine for forcing you to drag us kicking and screaming into doing it, right?" to which the court rightly told them to go fuck themselves. Also, this fine they fought so hard against paying was a measly $3 million dollars. That's like 0.01% of their yearly profit.

They are not a public corporation. As such, they don't have shareholders obsessed with doing the same thing their competitors are doing no matter what. I can fully guarantee you they would have started pushing a paid subscription to play online a long time ago if they weren't privately owned.

Adding a bunch of awful, trashy cosmetics and unoptimized payload maps to TF2 is hardly "supporting" it. L4D on the other had isn't supported by Valve at all. Last Stand was entirely made by the community and it's widely regarded as the worst update L4D2 ever got due to how shit the campaign was, how shit the Pitchfork, Shovel, and CS weapons are, the removal of laughing and taunting in Versus, and many of the re-added lines (Especially laughs) being really shit takes that were initially cut for a reason.

Gaben owns more than 50% so he's still the one doing the calls, compared to having to following the whims of retarded boomers who just want line going up as fast as possible and have no clue about anything. Just look at SNOY announcing they are doubling down on GAAS even after their attempts have all failed and everyone telling them to fuck off, Valve would have done the same shit with paid mods if they were public. Hell, Bethesda kept going with that idea to this day.

Exactly this. People have some bizarre nostalgia-induced blinders on when it comes to Valve. They remember the glory days of HL2 and orange box era and just ignore how anti-consumer they've been for over a decade. Like yeah, refund system now exists, but it took legal action in multiple countries just to make them comply with basic consumer protection laws. You'd think a company that makes money hand over fist through hats and fake gun skins would have the decency to not fight common sense consumer rights with that level of ferocity. But nah, gotta set a precedent that even the bare minimum is too generous.

Honestly, it's kind of poetic. They created a bunch of iconic franchises, built an empire off of them, and now treat them like old toys collecting dust on a shelf. Meanwhile, the fans-desperate and foaming-keep the memory alive, constantly begging for scraps. Valve doesn’t even have to lift a finger. They just sit there, rake in cash from the marketplace, and laugh as people still pray for HL3 or a new TF2 update that isn’t just 20 new hats and a reskinned Dustbowl.

No, it was a complete waste of time and money. Nobody else tried to fight it. Even EA didn't fight it.

The law was very clear on this and has been around for decades. It's not changing anytime soon. Valve, for some reason, just thought the law doesn't apply to them. That legal strategy did not work out well for them. Also, penalties for breaking the law don't tend to get remitted because after you break the law you agreed to follow it from now on. It's just expected you follow the law. It was incredibly arrogant and obnoxious for them to behave the way they did.

Absolutely. Halo and Gears are textbook cases of what happens when a franchise becomes a quarterly earnings bullet point instead of a creative project. They’re not making sequels anymore, they’re drafting content roadmaps and monetization funnels. If you’re not innovating or at least staying true to the core of your series, just let it rest. Studios used to believe in the “leave them wanting more” philosophy-now they leave us wanting the old devs back.
