No, you're right. I replayed both games last year and frozen wilds has so much more content in it, a lot more quests, more fun to explore.

Burning Shores is empty as fuck without hardly anything to do except a handful of quests. It looks really beautiful, but that's about it. The story and everything was pretty lame too.

Also, Horizon has one of the best "photo modes" of any game I've ever played. I spent so much time just taking screenshots when playing it because the scenery is so great in both games. Only Death Stranding has a better photo mode, though death stranding's aesthetics aren't anywhere near as interesting as Horizon despite having a better photo mode though both games are on the same engine.

The bigger crime committed was retconning Faro into a complete cartoon villain. The first game painted him as more of a techbro whose creation inadvertently caused the complete destruction of humanity in ways that were almost relatable - shortsighted developers, rampant greed, bad practices, all compounding into a weapon that was essentially impossible to stop when it went haywire. Faro felt to me always more like someone who completely broke apart under the burden of his guilt, which is why he decided to bury not only his mistake but all of human knowledge, to make absolutely sure it couldn't happen again.

Then the sequel retconned him into an arrogant retard who lived in a private temple bunker where he hung out with his harem and guru, and demanded to be worshipped like a god. I mean, really? Could he not just have been a tragic figure who couldn't bear the weight of his unimaginable guilt and spiraled off the deep end? I was so excited at the start of Forbidden West, when Aloy went on her dumb spiel where she NEEDED to get out right NOW, and didn't give two fucks about the embassy, or the fact that her running out ahead of schedule could compromise this extremely fragile peace between two embittered factions, and even just barely cared about the worker's conflict before that. And I was excited, because at the time I thought that this departure from her overly caring personality in the first game was deliberate. That her first adventure taught her about the stakes she was dealing with, and that her arc in this game would follow a Sylens trajectory - Aloy stops caring about individuals and their localized conflicts, because the problems she's dealing with are just so much bigger and more devastating than two tribes wiping each other out.

But no. It was just a generic girlboss moment where Aloy didn't care what some stupid stuffy man wanted. There was just no thought behind it. And that really set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Horizon games might be my favorite open worlds - the design, the combat, the world, the contrast between futuristic tech and wilderness, the monsters, the way you can kinda see how modern day concepts through the lens of myth and legend influenced the cultures in the game... the art and gameplay teams were absolutely putting in work and you can tell that someone cared about these things. The darkness of the world is all implied. There is some overt stuff, like how a good portion of the "wildlife" wants you fucking dead, and life outside of fortified settlements is not a great idea at the best of times. But the rest is just in the concept of all of humanity being fucking dead, their heritage and knowledge lost forever, and these primitive remnants clawing their way back to civilization on the ashes of billions of the dead. Plus the backstory you eventually unearth. Might sound gay, but when they talked about operation human shield on a global level near the end of the first game, all of humanity on a death march for a wonder weapon that never existed, that was pretty gruesome.

There is much about this game to like but also some problems that really fucking sap it. The stealth kill mechanics especially.

I always used it to go to Frozen Wilds the second the world opened up to collect the crystal bucks there and buy the best weapons at the start. For me, it's the disc launcher. Hated it at first, ended up being far and away my favorite weapon, and really stupidly powerful as well once you got a handle on it. Pretty glad they went away from bows just stomping every threat like in the first game.
