You as the average citizen, a mr nobody, would rather have a melee range weapon in case you run into one of the few super soldiers who carry these lightsabers that can cut through anything and who fight by pretty much predicting the future and who also are much stronger/faster/experienced than even grizzled military men let alone you?
You would rather bet on your sword somehow being an advantage against that instead of carrying a laser blaster that would otherwise be WAY more helpful in the other fights that are about 99.999% more likely to happen (against non-demigods with their own ranged weapons).

The in game lore had the recent invention of personal shields, that could repel blaster bolts for almost a minute. Since if only one side was shielded it turned into a “paintball vs AKs” scenario people started bringing swords and melee weapons as backup weapons. If both sides had shields the one that brought swords won. It’s a classic Rock Paper Scissors setup where blaster beat unshielded melee weapons, shielded blasters beat unshielded blasters, and shielded melee beats shielded blasters, so everyone who could brought both. Most of the melee users in the game also turn on their shields at the beginning of the fight and blasters do almost no damage to them, but you probably didn’t notice because you only ever did melee runs.

We all do. KotOR, Jade Empire, ME1, Dragon Age Origins. Best games ever made. ME2 and 3 are still good and DA2 was ok, but they weren't the same. Everything after that point is just atrocious.
