The title of Paper Mario just describes the 2D sprites in the 3D world. The characters are not supposed to literally be made of paper. The newer games where you're fighting office supplies are completely missing the point. It pisses me off so much.

This is the fault of localizers. In Japan the first game was called Mario Story, but the rest of the games adopted the Paper part of the title.

Pretty funny that the literal aesthetic of the series got flanderized. That’s the only identity they perceived out of the first two games. “Oh the characters are flat? Well that must mean literally everything must be made entirely out arts and crafts, and we have to constantly reference how they are made of paper and have insert a gimmick centered around the fact that they’re paper for every new entry. A Mario spin off series with fun characters and relatively interesting stories for the franchise and decently engaging turn based gameplay? The entire tone of the game feels like it’s trying to appeal to middle aged manchildren. There’s no appealing gag manga silliness found in the games. Yeah, I definitely prefer when they're just fantasy Mario stories that are being told from a storybook. They'll do some cheeky stuff with it, like Bowser taping Kammy to a page to get her into the star rod chamber, or the TTYD abilities just ""coincidentally"" being the same as folding paper, but for the most part, it's just Mario and his world being viewed through the lens of a pop-up book, not an excessively paper-themed world. Going too heavy on being literal paper with the aesthetic or having the bosses be "enemies of paper" like office supplies just sucks so much of the magic out of it.

But it's not the paper aesthetic, it's the storybook aesthetic. They're stories being told out of the books and such shown in the intro. Their paper qualities and aesthetic come from the fact that they're on the page. The worlds aren't made out of arts and crafts, they're pages come to life, like pop-up.

True, the first game did look more like a pop-up storybook than paper. TTYD kinda ditched that look early on though. And honestly, if the games never abandoned the RPG format, the whole complaint about the Paper aesthetic would just be a minor annoyance at worst to most people. The Paper stuff is bad not because of how it looks but because of how hard the devs leaned into it with every aspect of the game like gameplay or making a stapler a boss.
