So far the only thing that changes is recruiting minions for your own town, which is changing pretty much nothing of mechanical value, only flavour and atmosphere. Most bosses can be defeated through violence without changing the chapter endings, with the exception of the ones that force you to either stall or mercy, and one recurring boss in chapter 2 that's from the real world (and if you're violent, all that changes is one of his arms is messed up but that's it). For the optional bosses in chapters 1 and 2, the items you get depends on whether you defeated them violently or through mercy; violence in chapter 1 and mercy in chapter 2 get you the better items. The only alternate route so far is started in chapter 2 and requires you to hyperfocus on strengthening and bullying the guest party member you get in the middle third of that chapter.
Also, save all your revive items until the end of chapter 3. If you can't beat the rest of the game including optional bosses without revives until then, get better at the game. The optional bosses are 70% learning each battle's mechanics.

Man I'm attempting this right now on a playthrough, one specifically designed to give me the best chance against the Knight
it's pretty tough, but your advice is spot-on because you DEFINITELY want the Jevil's Knife (reduces rude buster tp by 10%) and the DEALMAKER (beat spamton NEO non-violent in normal route)
I don't think you need EVERY revive item, but you definitely need almost all of them. 3 Revivemints and a Revive Dust should be enough, to save room for team-heal items
AND DONT FORGET the Tension increasing stuff, you at least want the TensionMax for the Knight

I also think a lot of people screw up by equipping the Graze ribbons, not realizing that from Chapter 3 onward, it actually slightly reduces the amount of TP you gain from grazing, in return for the larger more forgiving hitbox

I can already tell I'm still going to fail to beat the Knight though. I seem to cap out at Jevil-tier opponents.

Her grand plan for the Underground after Asgore is destroyed was using the entire Underground in the same way the Ruins were, a death trap where humans just wait to die and be harvested.
It's actually really fucked up if you think about it even the slightest bit, and doesn't really need a bunch of Ter Ti Airy bullshit read in like defining 90% of the dialog in the game as belonging to another character.
It's something you don't REALLY get the opportunity to think about because you only really get to interact with Toriel very briefly at the start and end of chapters/the game

I was 12 when Undertale came out and was god awful at videogames, I spent an hour or two beating Asgore and how many fucking days grinding Sans during the summer of 2016.
A lot of the fights in Deltarune have amazing presentation but end up feeling underwhelming due to low difficulty, I just can't accept the excuse that Toby has to consider people who don't give enough of a shit or simply wouldn't find difficult gameplay fun for this sacrifice to be made, makes me sad, really feels like lost potential.

That could have even been tied up into the plot by saying that the presence of the Shadow Crystals increases the amount of malice in their immediate vicinity. Make them impossible to cast out of your inventory, like they have some power over your will, and you've got potential for a new route.

I think it might be a issue of genre. Undertale was a fairy tale. Deltarune is closer to urban fantasy for teenagers. That creates different expectations. I tend to be fairly easygoing with teenage characters because they are teens, but I know others are not like that.

Cutscenes are when (You) aren't in control, though. You only get the controls when WASD movement or dialogue choices apply, and Kris is aware of at least half of that, like trying to force Noelle to not ask a question because doing so gives you a chance to swooce into the room and fuck around with his dialogue. Plain old cutscenes? You can't do shit. Half the time you get fucking ripped out before it's over. To be EXTRA schizo, it all goes back to Toby's fascination with 'player choice' and how you're really only ever doing what the dev allows you to, so in this game you're not allowed to do jack or shit when it actually matters. Hell, Kris acts out on his own in cutscenes constantly, mostly to fuel Krusie shipping.

But also it's a matter of taste, I guess. I actually did not like Undertale all that much, I kinda absorbed it through detailed playthroughs but never really wanted to play it myself. Just felt like the whole moral was way too tied to its nature as a game, plus every single major character came off as a quirky douchebag at times.
In comparison, I love Deltarune because of how more grounded it is. It has the spirit of that "friendship adventure" style of stories that I adore, but it also adds some realistic character flaws and dark themes into the mix. The main friend group in Deltarune feels like they weren't cherry-picked for maximum wholesomeness but instead ended up together by coincidence, like it usually does happen. I guess if you don't like that grounded tone, then maybe it's not for you. Wouldn't say I imagine inserting myself into the story because of the realism factor, for me it's about the charm of the mundane, like every single Kris and Susie friendship moment.

I didn't like at all how nonsense the plot of chapter 2 was.
King threatening to kill Lancer was one of my favorite moments back in 2018. Everything about Spamton in Chapter 2 was perfect for my tastes.

I just feel the plot shifts too hard into trying to make me care about the emotional issues of those teenagers. Characters like UT Undyne and Asgore had emotional problems but it felt much more grounded and tasteful than the Susie drama and shit.
