What is your opinion of indie games that are just replicating old games as closely as the law allows?
Anonymous No.717606090
If I want more of that game then I'll play those indie games, if not then no.

That's all of them. They all do that.

If the original dev ain't making em anymore then fuck it why not
Some guy just wanted another Banjo Kazooie so he made his own legally distinct Banjo Kazooie

They seem to be made specifically and only for me.
Yooka Laylee was so good, it made me love 3d platforming again after playing a few duds like Kao 2 and the Crash trilogy.
I always play old emulated stuff and romhacks, it was so nice to play something actually new and well made, that still has that feel.

Impossible Lair was really good so I'm happy with it.

It’s good because these types of old school games that I grew up playing aren’t being made by the big mainstream studios anymore.

Expecting completely unique ideas in all cases is not realistic. Iteration and mimicry is part of the artistic process. If its good then that's good.

Its fine. I got exactly what I wanted with yooka laylee. This game taught me the retro shitters who fake nostalgia meme is real because the only people I know that hate it are actual faggots that have no real criticism. I 100% this game in like 14 hours on my first playthrough. The only bad stage or corporate cashino. Fuck that level. Everything else is good.

the problem is so many of these classic games were made by like 10-20 people.

a modern AAA demands at least 100 people, even if you can get the whole classic dev team on board they are the extreme minority.

That many are forgotten as they are mere phantoms of what people REALLY want. In the case of picreel, Sonic Mania happened and thus people moved on.

Why would I give a shit? It doesn't replace the other game. If it's worse, the original isn't hurt. If it sells better, well maybe that's because people like it better. This notion that companies shouldn't have to compete or put in effort to make a profit just because they can legally bully other people is retarded.

Like if AM2R is somehow a threat to Nintendo, then Nintendo deserves to lose any profit they MAY have lost (realistically it didn't lose them a penny). If a hobbyist in his spare time creates something that can harm the sales of a huge business, then what in the actual fuck is said business doing with their millions upon millions of dollars and countless resources and industry talent?

If imitators truly can hurt you, you deserve to get hurt. Compete, put effort, and make a decent product or shut the fuck up.

It's not technically bad, but the way the stages are designed makes traversal tedious, and the way the gameplay is structured guarantees maximum tedium.

Whenever I see criticism it's the usual 3d platformer fare
>the camera is bad
>you're just moving around an environment doing chores
>it's unclear where you're supposed to go
>I can't tell where my character is going to land
>the movements feel slippery and imprecise
same shit you'd read on magazines in the 2000s when they wanted to pan any platformer.
Also other generic stuff like "it's boring" and "it's bad".
I had a very good time with it.

It seems that unironically many who hated it did so because it's too old-school while looking too new.
Anonymous No.717618906
At least Bloodstained turned out exactly how I wanted it to.
Some visual misgivings and some rough performance aside. But that was never important to me.

It genuinely feels like Castlevania. As if it had still been developed by Konami.

That was my experience as well. It didn't blow me away, but I had fun and it scratched an itch that no other games at the time were even trying to scratch. Even other 3D platformers. Honestly if a true-as-possibly-could-be new Banjo game came out with the entire original dev team and they adhered as closely as humanly possible to Kazooie's design philosophy and not Tooie's, I think it would get the exact same reception Yooka-Laylee did.

It was mediocre which is even worse than being terrible
at least being terrible people can mock it but mediocre for something so hyped up and meant to be the successor of a beloved classic and you get people absolutely hating it

I think the Jontron debacle had a little impact on it too maybe

I think the best ones try to do a little something extra. Antonblast is much more faithful to Wario Land 4, but in the end I preferred Pizza Tower.

I think this could have been good, but oddly Snake Pass wound feeling more like a Rare game than this did despite being something completely new. When will indie devs make a blast corps successor?

Skylar & Plux is unlisted on Steam but I bought the key off a reseller. It's probably shit, I only played 20 minutes.
I heard Biomutant is bad although it has fans.

Probably unironically Onirism may be the closest thing.

I really think so because this thing FEELS like Jet force Gemini but with all the charm stripped off.
The idea behind the gameplay is so fucking insane this can't possibly be a fan game.

Get this: mandatory use of the controller, and they tried (again!) to re-invent the third person shooter control scheme.

The level design is VERY reminiscent of Jet Force but the levels are not as expansive (thank God) and instead of designing the art assets they seem to all be taken from a store or copy-pasted, with corridors and caves and swathes of land that all look the same like the Goldwood caves in JFG.

It has MANDATORY shooter levels and platforming areas where the control scheme changes (you can't impede it or reverse it). The platforming parts are actually ok, you explore an environment with some verticality and they bothered to hide collectibles. That part feels like a worse banjo.

The bugs are EXACTLY drones and they even explode in gory bursts.
There are birds (tribals) to collect and they can be killed.
