Because it was released unfinished and still ended with less than New Leaf had in exchange for island customization. People don't hate it though, the game is still widely played and popular.
On here though it's because everyone here wants ACGC/DnM+ and NH is extremely far removed from those games because it's more focused on decoration with villagers having less of a major role in the daily activities as well as "sanitized" dialogue.
Personally I think the game is fine overall in the state it ended up in, but unfortunately feels a tad unfinished. There should have been more options and items than it had instead of recolorings.
