The element missing here is FO3. It reeled in the retards. NV then impressed them with being slightly better.

Its as grim as you both are imagining, but its important to acknowledge that before FO3, the game that got reworked into NV was going to be a traditional cRPG. Van Buren's corpse lies on the ground where FO3 killed it, and NV wears its skin.

The part you are omitting is that we now know Van Buren would have been hot garbage because the people working on it said it was. Not enough money and no other company had enough money for FO3 either. Bethesda’s Fallout leading to FNV because Todd wanted to honor black isle is ironically, the best timeline. VB or any other successor would’ve been a ‘crpg’ but a less fun game than 3, and worse than FNV.

Up until 76 and the show, the real patricians recognized this as a worthy sacrifice. Until Bethesda bends the knee to the classicfags again, people incorrectly widely think this is the worse timeline.

I love Ulysses. He's a fantastic bookend to the opening of the game and the core themes of the franchise being how humanity will cope with the apocalypse, how new societies will grow in the ashes and ultimately rekindle the old flames of imperialism and war. Ulysses is a personification of that strife. Of the old sicknesses refusing to die and tainting new growth. Its why Honest Hearts and Lonesome Road are peak Fallout - not just NV's best expansions.
