Finally got around to playing the Adventures of Elliot demo.
What'd you guys think? Seems a little simple, unclear if the combat will open up later in the game.
Also I probably wouldn't pay more than 50 dollars for it

As a Zeldafag I liked it. I also see a lot of people comparing it to the mana games but I've never played a mana game before so I want to know how are they similar?

Is it an actual zelda clone with dungeons/puzzles or is it just top down action game?
Anonymous No.717613890
>>717613362
it has a lot of zelda similarities like hearts and subweapons (bomb, bow & arrow, even the chain and sickle reminds me of the ball & chain from twilight princess but better implemented) hell the game even has shrines, but it's clearly trying to do it's own thing despite borrowing some thing from zelda.

A good modern parallel would be CrossCode, if you're familiar with that one.
The demo has 2 dungeons that are relatively simple, not unlike the ones from the Bravely / Octopath games.
It also has a Magicite system that's similar to how badges work in Paper Mario (a limited resource that lets you equip specific boosts and upgrades)
So yes it's similar to 2D Zelda but with a bit more JRPG DNA

Does it looks as ugly in game as it does in the trailer? HD-2D games are already ugly as fuck but somehow they've scientifically engineer this to be even more hideous.

If you don't like HD-2D, don't get your hopes up.
I will say that they've appeared to tone back on the aggressive depth of field that created the diorama like effect with this one, likely due to better hardware. If youve played Links Awakening or Echoes of Wisdom you know what I mean.

which is pretty nutty because the only thing like it was bombing cracked walls

I can't think of anything I'd rather want to do less than play another square attempt at action combat, but exploiting octopath and trianglefags, and those that enjoy that aesthetic

Bravely Default 2 had similar issues but they made pretty substantial changes in response to survey feedback on that one so I'm hopeful. I agree, weapon and fairy ability switching being relegated to menus just slows things down unnecessarily.
There's also a lengthy pause when you unleash fully charged attacks that feels awkward too, dunno what they were going for there.
Anonymous No.717616765
>>717615816
I think with the pausing they were trying to achieve the same effect as actual Zelda games but didn't get the timing right.

The main menu reminded me of the GB Zelda games, and the quick menu reminded me of the Ring Menu from the Mana games. One major part I didn't like was the Magicite because it just seemed overly complicated. What's the point in having players mix and match magicite for different weapons if you can swap saved loadouts as fast as swapping the weapons themselves? I feel like that system could shift focus to equipping magicite to the individual weapons and drop the whole loadout thing entirely. Either that, or expedite the process by saving equipment slots to it as well, so a single saved Loadout changes your equipped Weapons and Magicite all at once.

I don't know if you checked co-op, but a second player is able to cycle magic with L and R, so that functionality is already part of the game. Considering there's currently an entire button dedicated to showing you the controls there's definitely some room for improvement.

The frog boss was fun, and I like that damage is threatening on hard mode. Everything else felt very dull. I'd need to see more before I'm convinced, maybe a second demo with more movement options. It made me just wanna play Napishtim-era Ys instead.

Feels just like the old 2D Zelda's. The demo is pretty short and is only there to showcase the gameplay, but it was nice and simplistic.

Don't know for sure if it will be a day 1 pick. Going to depend on the price and how much there is to do in the full game.

I didn't play octopath traveler, but I remember it having much more of a pixelated art style, even though they were also probably 3d models, they at least put in the effort to make those 3d models look like pixel art. Am I remembering wrong?
Anonymous No.717625276 >>717626117 >>717626982
>>717625067
No, you're right. While it was always 2D sprites in a 3D environment, they used to put a lot more effort in making those environments seem like pixel art. Nowadays they cut corners by making "HD-2D" that's actually just regular sprites in a low poly pixelated environment with a shit ton of post processing effects. This shit needs a performance mode to run on the Switch 2, and turning it off halves the framerate. It's awful.

I think my only big issue with the style is the crazy amounts of post processing effects they vomit onto their games. Good thing is that they're all on PC so you can just edit the ini to easily turn it all off and the games look significantly better without them.
