You mightn't have noticed but a lot of the characters in Ippo are largely based on real world boxers (ie. Takamura is based off Duran who progressed as a world champion through 6-7 different weight classes)

Ricardo is based on the real Ricardo who held the lightweight title for like a decade and went 50-0. Mexicans also largely dominated the lighter weights in the same way that Americans did for heavy for a long time
