iirc which I don't
a high religious/scholarly figure within Hornsent society either pre or post Marika's dominion/brutalization of the land of shadow/hornsent vassal kingdom (hence his home being called a Manse. Likely this was post Marika's dominion) who either accidentally or purposefully delved too deep into religious/academic texts/thought that he either caught the attention of the hornsent inquisition and or created an incursion/tolerance of the frenzy flame likely the latter which the inquisition has been unable to extinguish/only contain. He was likely encouraged/tricked/aided by Nanaya, a likely fingermaiden for a/the three fingers/frenzy flame.
For this crime the hornsent inquisition forever bound/tortured him with the greatsword of damnation, which coupled with the missing rune of death and or the nature of the torture caused him to forever exist in agony until the appearance of the tarnished. This agony, both physical and existential, in turn strengthened the despair within him, which in turn empowered him as an avatar/potential lord of the flame of frenzy, hence Nanaya telling him to simply endure it. It is unknown whether or not Midra wanted this. When the Tarnished arrives Midra is forced to give up his suffering, and gives into the flame of frenzy which he may not have wanted either due to fear of the flame's effects on the outside world, or because he felt the flame was not yet ready
