See, that's the problem
Sony funded an entirely new third party studio to be created JUST for All-Stars.
The plans for the game as well as a studio's formation were there before negotiations for third parties even commenced.
I just realized, PlayStation All-Stars would've done the Multiversus how it been made today

Most of the roster they added was just to advertise a game that was coming out around the same time. big daddy, dmc Dante, sweet tooth. infamous and some more got in just for that. a few classics got in but having no spiro, FF or tomb raider was a big complaint everyone had. It still gives me whiplash to think "oh ya fat princess..... That was a thing that got in." Also no variety in game modes. There was multiplayer and a standard singleplayer mode. I did like that each character had a "rival" that they would interact with but most the dialog just came down to "I don't like you." "well, I dont like you ether. Lets fight!"

On top of that the gameplay just didnt land and alot of characters were REALLY imbalanced. The only real neat idea it had was lhow a characters stage would get invaded by another franchise. And while the music was alright, hearing the mix-ups was also fun

The concept wouldn't work anyway. There's too many wannabe gritty and serious Sony franchises that clash too hard with not just the cartoony characters, but the entire concept of a platform fighter. It should've been a traditional fighter.

yeh. But twisted metal 4 came out around the same time as psasbr and they were using the new model for sweet tooth. It would have been nice if they threw in a classic skin for him. Alot of characters had similar treatments. If a company had a new game new coming out, they would want that shown off one way or another to build hype for it, So instead of OG Dante we got (fuck you) Dante. I remember them talking about how they were able to get alot of those characters in psasbr because of that very reason.

The game was fun if you treated it as its own game instead of comparing it to smash. Although the balancing was godawful between characters like Sack-boy who needed a combo set up to get a single kill off with what little range/killframes you have with his level 1 super and Dante where you can spam his abilities and get off a level 1 super that had infinitely more range than most characters. Stage transitioning from 1 IP to another was a pretty neat idea and I wish Nintendo copied that

HOW TO FIX PS ALL STARS FOR THE PLAYSTATION TRIPLE TIMES TWO
>Step 1: Improve PS Classics Services
Every first party game should be playable WITHOUT streaming as a baseline for the expectations. The big deal here is PS3, so either build an emulator and break out the source code and start porting.
You want a strong unified library with tons of variety to go "Look, PlayStation has tons of shit!"
>Step 2: PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale Reboot
The game should be free to play with a base roster of all the big names Sony wants on PS5 and 6.
The gameplay should drop the special move to kill shit, just have standard Smash gameplay.
>Step 3: Integrate Steps 1 and 2
Have the choice to buy more characters as DLC OR have the characters unlock based on game activity. If someone owns a Ratchet & Clank game, they get Ratchet in PS All Stars and the skin associated with that game.
Have those pets and taunts as microtransactions again, but also tie them into this, like you get them based on trophies you have in the given games.
>Step 3.5: Why?
This promotes brand unity, that PlayStation is a massive ecosystem, it gets people more invested in the games as these trophies aren't just arbitrary- they unlock stuff in this game EVERYONE has access to! It also encourages people to play the games they like a little bit more and get more invested in existing titles if they like the idea of getting Kratos a My Wife's Son minion without paying the $2-$5 microtransaction.
>Step 4: What Now?
Just continue to promote the title as a big unifier of PlayStation. Another thing Sony could pursue in this would be making Astro Bot packin titles a part of this ecosystem as well, or pull form Smash Brawl.
How about Astro Bot and PSAS have bite sized demos and trailers for the games included? Just chunks of games so it doesn't bloat the filesize too much, or free weekends for included games.

Work with me Sony, I can lose you billions on this.

Mental retardedness of the highest fucking caliber. Imagine creating a game centered on celebrating the history of your own company, consoles, and video game series, yet simultaneously excluding the most important and iconic video game characters in the history of your platform and the video game industry as a whole from said game. Instead you decide to put in fucking Big Daddy from Bioshock, Isaac Clarke from Dead Space, Nariko from Heavenly Sword, boring soldier guy from Killzone, Cole from Infamous, and other NEWEST and HOTTEST generic grim realistic 7th gen characters from your newest piece of shit PS3 console that normies at the time could recognize becouse it was NEW HOTTEST shit at the time. What an absolute fucking joke. One of the worst rosters in history.

Not to mention that the game was also unfinished as hell and developers were still working on multiple characters post-release, like Sortiara from Soul Sacrifice and Dart Fez from Legend of Dragoon. It's like Sony wanted this game to fail for some reason.

The PS3 era was when Sony really tried to push their first party output in way that wasn't seen since the dawn of the PS1
The PS3 dropping the ball hard early on created an incentive for the company to try and fund and promote as many first party hits they could attempt since for the most part they couldn't rely on third parties to the extent of their previous consoles did.
At some point I guess Sony figured they could try funding a Smash style crossover game to see if their work paid off
